Team-building Review Topical
❖ Purpose: To help groups in team training sessions learn from past experiences.
❖ Time Required: 15 minutes.
❖ Size of Group: Unlimited.
❖ Materials Required: Post-It Notes.
❖ The Exercise in Action: Gail Melin, a team trainer with 3M Tape Manufacturing in Hutchinson, MN, first asks participants to think of any team they’ve been a part of in the past, and using one color of Post-It Notes, list all the positive or effective characteristics of that team (one thought/idea per note). Using another color Post-It Note, they’re asked to list the ineffective behaviors. She then hangs a wall-sized model of a team’s typical development cycle, with phases including team formation and growth, stagnation, and breakthroughs. Participants are asked to stick their Post-It Notes on the phase in the model where they observed that behavior on their former teams. “The result is a better illustration of where and how many teams get stuck, or development gets stunted,” and how improvement happens, Melin says. Discussion and debriefing that follows usually centers on how team members can become part of solutions. She also has participants develop lists of proactive and reactive guidelines to use on their current teams.
