Opener Energizer Communication
Team-building Review Topical: Diversity
❖ Purpose: To get participants thinking about differences and similarities between themselves and other course participants.
❖ Time Required: 10 minutes.
❖ Size of Group: Unlimited, but participants should work in small groups of four.
❖ Materials Required: None.
❖ The Exercise in Action: Susan Johnson, a manager of youth programs at the National Wildlife Federation, Arlington, VA, divides participants into groups of four and gives them two minutes to discover two ways that all of them are alike and four ways that they are different. The time limit is optional, Johnson says, but tends to add a level of excitement to the exer- cise. “Easy” answers, such as noting that all members are wearing shoes, are discouraged. From there, it’s easy to spring into a discussion of how the groups benefit from their differences and similarities, how those characteristics apply to actual workplace situations, or simply recognizing the importance of acknowledging that diversity exists.
