SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS

Housed within a historic university at the centre of Romania’s capital, Bucharest Business School offers two joint MBA degree options that have recently achieved AMBA accreditation. Tim Banerjee Dhoul presents an overview

HISTORY Established in 2014, Bucharest Business School (BBS) is the postgraduate business faculty of Bucharest University of Economic Studies (ASE Bucharest) – one of 13 faculties and departments at the university. ASE Bucharest was founded by Royal Decree in 1913 as the Academy of High Commercial and Industrial Studies. It took on its current mantle in 1967, at the start of modernisation processes designed to transform Romania’s education system. Today, it is one of South-Eastern Europe’s largest institutes of higher education in economics and business; at the turn of its 110th anniversary, the university estimated that it had more than 350,000 alumni, as well as around 25,000 current students across all degree levels.

LOCATION

COURSES BBS’ MBA portfolio consists of a Romanian-Canadian (‘Roca’) executive

BBS lies in the heart of Bucharest, Romania’s capital and largest city. A regional powerhouse for finance and culture, Bucharest has the fourth-largest population among cities in the European Union (EU), behind only Berlin, Madrid and Rome. These figures are based on a city’s population being defined by its administrative boundaries rather than its wider urban or metropolitan area. Romania underwent rapid economic growth in the early 2000s and its economy now ranks among the fastest-growing in the EU. In 2022, Its GDP per capita stood at 77 per cent of the EU average, up from 44 per cent in 2007.

MBA (EMBA) and a Romanian-French (‘Inde’) MBA, both of which are taught in English over approximately two years. The Roca EMBA dates back 30 years and has seen the school collaborate with a trio of leading universities in Canada. It is now offered as a joint degree in conjunction with its founding partner in the programme, the University of Quebec at Montreal (Uqam). The school’s Inde MBA, founded in 1991as a result of an intergovernmental agreement between France and Romania, is a joint degree run in collaboration with the International Institute of Management at the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers (Cnam) in Paris.
