PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

In announcing the AQ6370E optical spectrum analyzer from Yokogawa Test & Measurement as ‘Most Innovative Test Equipment’, judges at the ECOC 2024 Awards noted that this advanced device meets growing demand for a high-precision instrument that can measure and analyze the optical spectrum of components and light sources in large-capacity and high- speed optical communication networks. ECOC 2024 AWARD FOR MOST INNOVATIVE TEST EQUIPMENT: AQ6370E OPTICAL SPECTRUM ANALYZER FROM YOKOGAWA TEST & MEASUREMENT

Fast, precise and easy to use, the AQ6370E supports the development of next-generation optical devices and components for use in cloud services, 5G communications, and other information and communication services. The instrument also supports developments in photonics-electronics convergence (PEC) technology, and the improvement and diffusion of silicon photonics devices. Evaluating characteristics and quality in such applications requires a high-performance optical device that is able to analyze light wavelength components and measure wavelength characteristics. VERSATILE WAVELENGTH With its versatile wavelength range of 600-1700 nm, the AQ6370E can characterize a broad range of components, including lasers for optical communications, optical transceivers and optical amplifiers. It is able to measure high-power sources such as optical amplifiers and pump lasers for Raman amplifiers, as well as very weak optical signals. Users can choose from seven measurement sensitivity categories in line with the test application and measurement speed requirements. The AQ6370E, released in the summer of 2023, is an upgraded version of the popular AQ6370D from Yokogawa Test & Measurement. It offers higher level sensitivity of -85 dBm (1000 to 1300 nm) and a smoothing function to reduce noise on the spectrum. In addition, the device allows users to obtain a better dynamic range (78 dB) by reducing the

influence of stray-light, which occurs when the input is a strong optical signal.

INNOVATIVE FUNCTIONS Impressing the panel of judges were a number of innovations that streamline development and production processes, including a unique free-space input design that permits users to evaluate both DWDM-class single-mode and VCSEL-sourced multimode fibers in a single model. The instrument also offers a HCDR (High Close-in Dynamic Range) mode, a key performance criterion when developing lasers and optical devices. HCDR makes the spectrum around the peak sharper and the side modes more visible when analyzing a laser source with a single longitudinal mode. HCDR is available on the AQ6370E-20 high- performance model, which offers a higher wavelength accuracy of ±0.008 nm between 1520 and 1580 nm. The AQ6370E standard model still provides an impressive accuracy of ±0.015 nm. Among further innovative features are SMSR (Side-Mode Suppression Ratio) and application (APP) mode. SMSR provides two sensitivity settings that can accelerate testing by measuring a laser’s SMSR up to twice as fast as conventional sensitivity mode. APP mode provides a user interface that is specific to the device under test (DUT). The interface navigates the user through the entire test process, from configuring the settings to result output, so even customers who are unfamiliar with optical spectrum analyzers can use the AQ6370E with ease.

LARGE TOUCHSCREEN Further assisting ease of use and intuitive operational efficiency is a larger (10.4-inch) LCD touchscreen. Users can change measurement conditions, perform analyses and adjust the optical spectrum view as if they were operating a tablet device. It is possible to zoom or shift the waveform view using simple tap and drag functionality. “Developers can leverage the benefits of the AQ6370E to advance their optical designs and help make digital communication more efficient and capable than ever before,” says Edwin Luijks, Product Manager – Test and Measurement at Yokogawa Test & Measurement. “Through our more than 40 years of experience in the optical market, we know that continuous innovation remains essential in helping industry, academia and research institutions remain at the forefront of their activities.”
