EVENT FOCUS TOP CONFERENCE

TELECOMMUNICATIONS, OPTICS & PHOTONICS CONFERENCE

25th – 26th FEBRUARY 2025, LONDON, UK

Now in its fourth year, the Telecommunications, Optics and Photonics Conference (TOP) has become the go-to event for the optical communications industry. Developed in conjunction with Optical Connections, the conference provides excellent networking opportunities for optical and photonic component and systems manufacturers and developers, along with fibre infrastructure and data centre providers. It focuses on the development and application of optics and photonics in telecommunications and data centres, along with presentations on photonic components, free- space optics and quantum communications.

DAY ONE Day one begins with Keynotes from Peter Winzer, from Nubis Communications and Nokia’s David Neilson. Post-coffee break, there will be a panel discussion on the impacts of AI/ML on future telecoms and data centre networks. The afternoon session on Telecommunications will feature presentations on Numerical Simulations and Experimental Assessments of Ultra-wideband Optical Fibre Communication Systems; Extending the Capacity of Spatial Division Multiplexing Systems; and Challenges in Scaling a Global Network Infrastructure. Running in parallel, the focus of Stream 2 will be Data Centres , featuring a presentation on Advancing Data Centre and AI Cluster Interconnects with Co- Packaged Optics for High-Efficiency Cloud Computing. The day will continue with streams on Photonics for RAN , which includes the Role of Plasmonics in Future Radio Access Networks. The parallel stream on Free Space Optics will include talks on MWIR and LWIR FSO Communications with Unipolar Quantum Optoelectronics; Satellite- based Quantum Communications; and Mode-division Multiplexing Free-Space Optical Communications: Capacity and Turbulence Resiliency.

DAY TWO Day two kicks off with Keynotes from the Gerald Buller from the Heriot-Watt University and Francesco Poletti from the University of Southampton. These will be followed by a Panel/Workshop on UKRI Future Telecoms Research Hubs: recent progress, highlights and future vision, with Harald Haas from the University of Cambridge, and Oxford University’s Dominic O’Brien. The session will be chaired by Andrew Lord, senior manager, Optical Research at BT. In the afternoon, discussions will focus on Photonic Components , including a presentation by EXFO’s Sophie Lange on Enhancing Photonic Integrated Circuits: Advanced Testing and Automation Strategies and Metallic Interconnects for Co-Packaged PICs. The Telecommunications II stream includes talks on Advanced Characterization of Optical Modulators and Coherent Receivers for Multi-Band Transmission Systems Beyond C- and L-Band, and End-to-End Learning based Probabilistic Constellation Shaping in High-Capacity Optical Fibre Communication Systems. The final sessions of the Conference will include Photonic Components which will include presentations on CMOS-

compatible process for fabricating high-speed moduators in BTO, and Metallic Interconnects for Co- Packaged Photonic Integrated Circuits. Meanwhile, the Telecommunications and Free Space Optics stream will include presentations on High- sensitivity/single-photon SPADs and Continuous-Variable QKD for Flexible and Efficient Quantum Secure Optical Communications. Delegates can expect to hear from companies including Infinera; Nokia Bell Labs; Meta; OFCOM; Lumentum; and Omdia, along with a number of academic speakers from the universities of Cambridge; Southampton; Aston; UCL; Strathclyde; and the Tyndall Institute. More presentations will be announced shortly, and full details of the conference programme can be found here .
