KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

8. Providing leadership and support at all levels of the University, on all aspects of Estate management and building improvement programmes to support Faculties and Directorates in meeting the needs of students/ staff/service users. 9. Ensure decision making, communications and consultation within the department, adopt a holistic and diverse approach, to ensure all areas of University life are appropriately represented. 10. Ensure ongoing statutory and regulatory compliance of Estates through prioritised investment, planning and implementation. 11. Support the University Executive in decision making, by providing recommendations, advice and costed scenarios, where the outcomes will be influenced or influence the Campus and Estate functions. 12. Ensuring that the University’s sustainability strategies are a core consideration of all activities, to ensure the long term environmental and financial objectives of the institution are met. 13. To hold full delegated responsibility of the Estates function when deputising for the Director of Estates and Facilities Management as required, including holding responsibility for reporting to the Executive and leading the wider Estates and Facilities Management Division. 14. Hold operational responsibility for the estates roadmap, and therefore to assume a high degree of autonomy as the post holder is expected to make informed decisions based of robust data in support of major initiatives. 15. Preservation of architect Sir Basil Spence’s famous listed buildings and surrounding landscape, which make up the heart of the campus, while supporting there evolution to meet current and emerging, student and pedagogical needs.

1. Leadership of the development and implementation of estate strategy and

masterplanning, to allow the generation of a capital programme of works. The strategy and programme of works to be continually monitored and aligned to the strategic vision of the University and changing context of finances and the wider Higher Education sector, to ensure all investments best serve the needs of the Institution, from the short to long term. 2. Leading the estates planning process to ensure sustainable property and asset management (inclusive of space management) and ensuring the estate is fit for purpose, at a functional level. 3. Leadership and accountability of the capital and revenue programme delivery, consisting of: Long Term Maintenance (LTM), programme Schools and Directorate works, refurbishment and new build construction projects generally from £500k to £100m in value, along with working with third party developers on large scale (£300m) residential projects. 4. Successful delivery of the capital programme, ensuring projects are delivered within the framework of, value for money, quality, suitability, sustainability, spatial efficiency, statutory compliance in relation to buildings and procurement. Project delivery to be managed, to allow the institution to clearly identify and monitor project benefits against the framework. 5. Monitor, maintain and report overall investment programmes, risk profile, progress against programme, interdependence log and contract exposure, in close conjunction with other Professional Services divisions. 6. Drive a safety culture within the team and across university (with areas that deliver construction related works e.g IT services) and with all suppliers ensuring all health and safety audit requirements are implemented to ensure the delivery of a safe, healthy and secure environment for students, staff and visitors. 7. The role of Deputy Director of Estates & Facilities Management

Main Purpose of Job Reporting to the Director of Estates, Facilities and Commercial Services, the post holder will be responsible for leading the strategic planning, development and management of a multi million pound University Estate investment programme (including partnership programmes), alongside space and property management. The core outcome will be an efficient campus, which enhances the student experience, provides excellent research facilities, and teaching environments conducive to learning. The post holder will also act as the Deputy to the Director of Estates, Facilities and Commercial Services We are seeking an individual with a proven track record of leading large-scale capital development programmes in a comparable context. The role would suit an individual that is motivated to lead and manage a diverse team with a portfolio spanning masterplanning, capital programme delivery, infrastructure management, space management and property management. Experience of working across estate portfolios and capital developments with comparable characteristics (high-footfall, diverse, technically complex, multi-building estate portfolio) to the University of Sussex portfolio would be particularly advantageous.
