good causes. Imagine what could be achieved if there was a greater awareness and more employers actively offered and promoted payroll giving. The CIPP is part of the Accessible Payroll Giving project, which is a cross sector and cross-stakeholder initiative, to build a business case that could be taken to government to encourage the mandating of the payroll giving scheme for medium to large companies. How to join the scheme It’s easy to get involved and free to set up payroll giving. Employers need to: l contact an HM Revenue and Customs approved payroll giving agency to set up a scheme. The list can be found at: https:// ow.ly/bcf650UswaH l make deductions each time a payroll is processed. The donation will be taken from the employees’ pay before tax but after NICs l send the donation to the agency within 60 days l keep records, including: ❍ a copy of the employer’s contract with the agency ❍ a copy of the employee’s voluntary deduction authorisation ❍ details of payments made by each employee ❍ details of payments made to the agency / receipts. Further information can be found on the payroll giving month website at: https:// ow.ly/BSe650Usy4I. How to get involved If your organisation has a payroll giving scheme in place, reminding colleagues that they can give this way is a great way to champion charities during payroll giving month. If you don’t have a scheme in place, now is the time to pledge to set up a scheme and receive an easy step-by-step guide on your next steps. Another reason to celebrate In February, we also celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, https://ow.ly/ HUx450UsCP8, which will take place on 10-16 February this year. It is an exciting opportunity for us all at IPP Education and CIPP to appreciate the achievements of apprentices.

“There are still many organisations that are not engaging with an existing scheme or don’t have a scheme at all. At a time when charities are struggling due to several extremely challenging years, payroll giving is essential to helping them to continue their vital work”

The week-long celebration promotes apprenticeships within workplaces of all sizes and sectors and provides the chance to highlight the benefits of work-based training and the opportunities they bring. The scheme allows new skills and growing talent within the workplace. This is also a great way to help younger people ‘earn-while-you-learn’ and puts them in the driving seat. You can find out more on apprenticeships at https://ow.ly/ r4qM50UsCqz or hiring an apprentice at https://ow.ly/Lbqk50UsCzi. Apprenticeships are a national effort, and the apprenticeship levy puts employers at the heart of paying for, choosing training and placing the funding of apprenticeships on a workable foundation. If you are an employer, find out if you should be paying the apprenticeship levy and how to work out and report your payments at https://ow.ly/ J17450UsCiF. An apprenticeship is still often thought of as only for school leavers and applicants are required to be between 16-19 years old. These days that couldn’t be further from the truth, especially now with the help of the apprenticeship levy. There is a wide range of apprenticeship levels available for all ages. They can offer a world of opportunity, whether it’s a new position in the business or for an existing employee who’s looking for their next challenge, their next stepping stone or a confidence boost.

experiencing day to day. It is also a fantastic opportunity for smaller organisations where payroll sits within wider functions such as human resources or finance – giving the chance for a ‘payroll lead’ to broaden their skills and ensure payroll is given the care it deserves. The Level 5 Payroll Assistant Manager Apprenticeship will help your team leaders, supervisors and senior payroll team members to take the next step in their careers. It builds confidence, leadership skills, technical excellence and will challenge them to approach their role in a new way. IPP Education is proud to be an Ofqual recognised Awarding Organisation, offering end-point assessments (EPAs) for the Level 3 Payroll Administrator Apprenticeship and Level 5 Payroll Assistant Manager Apprenticeship. We take great pride in delivering EPA services and seeing the apprentices through the final part of their journey, after all the hard work they have put in prior to reaching EPA. This has allowed us to see the benefits that can be reaped from an apprenticeship – pay rises and promotions are common, as is moving on to a higher qualification once they have the buzz from receiving their certificate. As the Chartered body for the payroll profession, we are proud to advise that we offer all Level 3 Payroll Administration Apprenticeship candidates free of charge membership of the CIPP at affiliate student level for up to two years, and for Level 5 Assistant Payroll Manager Apprenticeship candidates the CIPP offers up-to two years of associate student membership. On successful completion of the Level 3 qualification, individuals will be eligible to apply to upgrade their membership to paid associate level. For those completing the Level 5, they will be able to upgrade to paid full membership. Now it’s your chance to help others #ChoosePayroll . n

Payroll apprenticeships There are currently two payroll

apprenticeships, a Level 3 and a Level 5. Both levels can be funded from the apprenticeship levy and will allow employees to learn on the job while also growing personally. The Level 3 Payroll Administrator Apprenticeship is perfect for entry level employees already working at your company who are ready to expand their knowledge and technical skills beyond what they are
