“I think you’re old enough now,” Gramma smiled.
“Can we decorate the bird tree first?” asked Chloe.

“Sure,” answered her Gramma Jazzy. “It’s my favourite,” she confided. She loved ha- ving her grandchildren help decorate her Christmas trees. Every year, she decorated six, and whoever arrived first got to choose fromone of her themes. “Which one do you like best? The angels? The musical instru- ments? Or this one here?”
Gramma brought Chloe close to the tree and lifted her up. Chloe carefully pinched the metal clasp on the feet of the bird and then clamped it to the very top of the tree. “Nowmake a wish,” Gramma said. “Just like my Daddy always told me to do.”

“I wish I had a puppy. What do you wish for?”
“Oh, it’s your cookie tree!” chimed Chloe.
“I wish for Barley toy candies, ribbon candy and a big orange in my stocking, just like when I was young.”

“Do you remember why that one doesn’t get decorated until Christmas week?”
“Is that all you used to get for Christmas?”
“Because you have tomake the cookies last till Christmas,” Chloe nodded knowingly.
“Well, no, not exactly, honey. You see, back then, Santa only brought us each one special present.”

Gramma opened a box covered with bird wrapping paper and gently unwrapped an odd-shaped package. She handed Chloe a delicate, bright-red porcelain cardinal. Chloe’s eyes grew big and her words came out in an excited rush, “You’re letting me put the cardinal on this year?”
“Is that how you got the cardinal?”
“Yes, that’s right. I was very young.”
“So it’s really old?”
“Yes,” Gramma laughed. “When I saw it in a shop window, I prayed that Santa would bring it to me for Christmas. Daddy said it wasn’t really a suitable gift for a little girl. But Christmas morning came and there was the precious cardinal. I was thrilled. I promised I’d always keep him safe.”
