IN MEMORIAM
Lucy Nodeland Christianson, class of 1942, worked in the Jim Dan Hill Library at UWS from the mid to late 70s. She passed away October 31, 2021, at the age of 100. Frank Hudacek worked in facilities at UW-Superior as a maintenance mechanic from 1992 to 1994. He passed away October 13, 2021. Sam Maday, class of 2010, was most recently a cultural and educational coordinator, and an assistant coach with the men's and women's track and field programs at UW-Superior. Under his tutelage, seven Yellowjacket throwers qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships on 12 occasions. The indoor meet hosted each winter at UWS has been renamed the Maday Classic in his honor. Maday passed away December 18, 2021. Roger Plachta was head coach of Yellowjacket softball from 2000 to 2018. His teams set 65 school records, won a WIAC division championship in 2001 and WIAC championships in 2002 and 2004. In 2016, the first season in the UMAC, he guided the Yellowjackets to the playoff championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament, the third appearance in school history. Dr. Ralph Seelke began as associate professor of biology at UW-Superior in 1989 and retired as professor in 2015. In retirement, he also taught for several semesters in China, Kenya and Ethiopia. Seelke passed away December 30, 2021. Bernard “Oscar” Smith Jr. worked in facilities management at the Halbert Heating Plant where he began his career in 1989 as a maintenance mechanic and retired in 2011 as superintendent. He passed away December 6, 2021. Robert Watson served as director of financial aid at UW-Superior from 1982 to 1984. He passed away April 27, 2022. Donald Weyers began his tenure at UW-Superior as an associate professor of mathematics in 1964 and retired as professor in 1993. In the 90s, Weyers and his wife moved to the United Arab Emirates where he taught at the university for six years. He passed away December 26, 2021.
