of German theologians; and strang e to say, kindred conditions account for it. Incomprehensible as it is to Conserva tive men and believing Christians, these R ationalists regard themselves as right. U n ju st as it may be to feed one’s forces from the larders of th e people fought, Modernists believe the end justifies th e means, while the capture of th e schools of th e North, th e partial victories in th e schools of th e South, and th e pros pect of tak ing over an ever-increasing number of pulpits, gives to the infi delity of Modernism an energy such as the skepticism of past centuries has sel dom known. To make peace w ith such fighters is practically impossible. The tide must be tu rn ed , and tu rn it will if th e pres en t dispensation continues. Evangel ical churches will tire of th is infidel lordship. Evangelical people will sicken of the husks of rationalism and yearn again for th e fru its of th e Spirit. Even now they are beginning to realize th e ir losses and to rebel against the ruthlessness of “ th e new religion.” Christianity will not be easily crushed! The tru e church holds her M aster’s prom ise of power against the gates of Hell. Again and again she has been trodden down to rise in renewed and unexpected, vigor. Again and again' she has suffered apparen t defeat only to re tu rn to th e field w ith fresh fight ing powers. Modernism may be th e apostasy of Prophecy; but, if so, her victories will be short-lived, and the final conflict will not end in an arm i stice resting on fourteen points only p artially though t through and prema tu rely signed, nor will th e peace of the fu tu re be contingent upon the forma- • tion of an- efficient “League.” On the contrary, “ the Lord of Hosts” will bare His arm . Unbelief will be beaten back to the p it from whence it em anated, and “ tru th crushed to earth , .will rise again,” and rise to ru le as is T ru th ’s eternal right.

SEARCHING SENTENCES You would n o t d are to be careless be fore an earth ly Monarch, o r so lazy in manner, as when in p ray er before God! (Must not we all be humbled a t th is?) You would n o t d are to go in la te to your daily work as you arriv e a t a m eet ing, w ithou t rea l cause. (This does' no t refer to those who come straig h t from business, th a t they may not be kep t away altogether. The h ab itu al 2 or 10 m inutes late of th e Lord’s Day, and other examples of h ab it are before us. And the “custom” is so engrained, th a t a justifiable ex cuse is imagined, and w ith th is drug th e conscience is luiled to sleep). You would n o t d are to be absent from daily employment, as you are sometimes from sp iritu al arrangem ents, w ithou t an explanation. ( “Ah,” you reply, “ I like to feel free.” Freedom is no t irregularity, th a t is self-slavery. W hat if th e hand is free from th e working tog ether of th e o ther p arts of the body? W hat if some limb je rk s on its “ own account,” out of harmony? We call it p ara ly sis). You would n o t d are to serve your earth ly m aster, as you servfe th e Lord! — you would be dism issed. See Mai. 1 : 8 . (And yet you w ant to please Him. “Ah,” says one, “T hat is different, I am paid by an earth ly m aster, and have fixed hours.” Is love w eaker th an money? Is lack of fixity th e devil’s opportunity?) You would n o t ven tu re to an earth ly exam ination w ith th e same irre g u la r study which you offer to th e Bible o r to th e learn ing by h e a rt of Scripture.
