(35) And when he cam e upon the stairs, so it was, th at he Was borne of the soldiers for the violence of the people; (36) For the multitude of the people follow ed after, crying, Aw ay w ith him. (37) And a s Paul w as to be led into the castle, he said unto the chief captain, May I speak unto thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek? (38) A rt not thou that Egyptian, which before these days m adest an uproar, and leddest out in to the w ilderness four thousand men that were murderers? (39) B ut Paul said, I am a m an which am a Jew of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, a, citizen of no m ean city: and, I beseech thee, suffer m e to speak unto the people. (40) And when he had given him li cen se, P a u l sto o d on the sta irs, and beckoned w ith the hand unto the peo ple. And when there w as made a great silence, he spake unto them in the H ebrew tongue, saying, (1) Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I m ake now unto you. was an early disciple,— one of th e first. No higher dignity can he conferred upon a man th a n to he a disciple of Jesus Christ. They spent a day in fellowship, and a royal one it m ust have been with such companions. The day following (which may have been Pentecost, Acts 20:16) they m et th e Church in its official capacity. O ther apostles may have been present, or many of them may have been away on evangelistic tours. (32) Who imm ediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them : and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul. (33) Then the chief captain cam e near, and tooik him, and com m anded him to be bound up w ith two chains; and demanded who he was, and w hat he had done.
