for Christ and to add honor to His name. Many who join th e church seem to th in k th a t they have nothing to do in getting others to become Christians. I t is th e plan of Christ in saving men th a t H is church shall grow through th e efforts of its members. One day by th e Jo rdan river, two men heard John speak of Jesus and they followed Jesus. Soon each one of these had brought his brother, and then th e re were four. Each Christian has been b rough t by some body else. We are saved to serve. THURSDAY, October 27. I Cor. 8 :1 - 13. Christian Adaptation. There are many weak people in the world. Some have a narrow out-look and an imperfect conscience and are h ard to get along with. Some are sensitive, self-conceited and easily of fended. Some are obstinate, unreason able and uncharitable. A successful w inner .of souls must accommodate him self to all these classes. He must ad ju st himself to th e ir prejudices and caprices w ith tireless patience, ta c t and gentleness. P astors, teachers and Christian w orkers of every name need th is lesson if they would fulfil th e ir sacred tru st acceptably. I t is easy to become im patient and yield to vexation when dealing w ith th e whims and fool ish notions of ignorant, ill-natured peo ple. If we yield to th is sp irit we shall do little good in th e world. “To the weak became I as weak, th a t I m ight gain th e weak.” The Christian life means self-denial. W hatever we do th e motive must be something outside of self. FRIDAY, October 28. I Cor. 10:1-18. C hristian Temperance. The Christian should be tem perate in all things. Those who are in tra in ing for any kind of a contest are kept on plain diet and strictly required to observe th e rules of health. Thus th e ir bodies become strong and sup ple and they are prepared to do th eir best. So should it be in th e Christian life. A Christian must control appetite, temper, feeling and keep th e physical n atu re in subjection. This is th e only way to noble and vic torious living. P aul saw th e possi bility of peril in his own life. “Lest I myself should be a castaway.” He is no t speaking of salvation b u t of ser vice. There is solemn warning in th e though t th a t even afte r one has been helpful to others in teaching or preach ing, one's own life may be m arred by
MONDAY, October 24. I I K ings 5 :1 - 14. The preaching of th e cross is to them th a t perish foolishness b u t unto us who are saved it is th e power of God. Naaman scorned th e idea of washing in the Jo rd an to he healed of leprosy. I t was foolishness to him. A fterward however, he found th is washing to be th e power of God, th a t is, God’s appointed way to work H is cure. The sprinkling of th e blood of a slain lamb upon a door post seemed a foolish thing to do, yet it was the power of God in saving a n ation ’s first born from death. Spiritual blessings are not presented in form s th a t a ttra c t worldly eyes. They frequently seem repellent and undesirable. When they are once accepted, th e ir beauty and worth become manifest. The Gospel way of salvation is foolishness to th e n atu ra l man because he can not see any relation of cause and effect be tween th e cross and th e resu lt in a sinn er’s life. Experience is th e con vincing te st of its effectiveness. TUESDAY, October 25. Rom. 5:1-11. Our R ighteousness from God. We have no righteousness of our own. Our best moralities are filthy rags. Our holiest deeds are unclean in the sight of Heaven. Wash as we may in th e pu rest w ater, we shall still be vile before God. Christ becomes our righteousness in two ways. By resting upon His finished atoning work His m erit is imputed unto us and- our standing in law before God is made right. This is justification. Then by His Word and Spirit His life is im part ed to us and makes us righteous in h ea rt and character. This is santifica- tion. All our redemption is from Him un til its consummation in glory. When we stand before Him in the glory w ith white robes and palms and crowns, nothing will be our own. It is all of Him and He shall have th e praise. WEDNESDAY, October 26. I Cor. 9: 19-27. Christian Service. We belong to Christ for love and service. We are not to spend all our tim e in praising Him by word and song. ,He w ants us to serve others even as He did. He said, “ I am among you as he th a t serveth,” Luke 22:27. His faith ful Apostle said, “I made myself ser van t unto all,” I Cor. 9:19. The pu r pose of th is service is, not to win friends for ourselves or to gain honor for our own name bu t to win friends
