PROJECT ABSTRACT

Summerhill Community Unity Festival

Name of Applicant: Summerhill Neighborhood Development Corporation

Goal: 1,000 Neighbors: Reach out and invite ALL Summerhill neighbors to our Community Unity Festival and get them engaged, build relationships, and develop long lasting connections. We will use this event as the kickoff to our SNDC Strategic Vision and Plan

Project goal(s) and objectives: Invite and engage a wide range of Summerhill Neighbors

Targeted population and neighborhood: All neighbors of Summerhill

Overview of project scope (types of services to be provided): The Summerhill Community Unity Day/Festival is designed to provide the total community an opportunity to come together to celebrate the rich history of Summerhill while getting to know their neighbors. The community has experienced extraordinary growth over the past five years with no single opportunity for the new residents tomeet legacy residents and/or other new residents. Meeting neighbors promotes community development, economic development, and public safety. The day will include activities that will attract ALL residents and their families – old (legacy), new, senior citizens, as well as children and youth. We will also embrace and celebrate the range of cultures represented in our neighborhood with neighbor hosts, cultural foods, arts and culture immersions.

Recently, SNDC completed its 5-year strategic plan This event will be used as launchpad for the recently developed strategic plan for SNDC. This plan, which centers on 9 THINK BIG Vision Snapshots, will be the design framework for the event and give residents an opportunity to help build Summerhill’s vision in a fun, festive experience. One strategic priority that our neighbors strongly supported was to CENTER OUR COMMUNITY. This is our call to build community in the neighborhood across generations, across resident tenure and across races. Please find excerpts from our strategic plan below. The full plan can be found here.

The event will include parades, tents, kids, activities, neighborhood partners, small businesses and more. We will get neighbors involved in the ideation process and create additional experiences Proposed performance outcomes: Attendance – 1,000 Attendees; Event evaluations – On site survey / interviews for high response feedback.

Amount Requested: $47,047

PROJECT NARRATIVE

Organizational Overview Provide a brief history of the organization and its work in the stadium neighborhoods. Explain the fit between the organization’s mission and the proposed project. NOTE: This is your opportunity to convey your successes and to make the case that your organization is the right one to implement this project. OUR MISSION SNDC’s exclusive purpose is the charitable, economical, educational and social development of the community. This includes the welfare, independence, and self-sustaining survival as a core Atlanta neighborhood. The organization hopes to return to the original quality of life that was once attained within this downtown neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. OUR HISTORY Organized in 1988 and officially incorporated in 1991, Summerhill Neighborhood Development Corporation (SNDC) exists to combat the legacy of redlining in the Summerhill neighborhood. Once a community of affluence largely inhabited by freed slaves and Jewish immigrants, a series of factors – including the intentional bisection of the neighborhood by the I-20 interstate and other unfavorable and racially-based political decisions, riots, and resulting suburban flight – triggered a steep decline in the neighborhood, leaving behind a poor, isolated African American community frustrated by the conditions of the neighborhood and its residents. Galvanized by the killing of a blackman by a police officer and a subsequent riot in 1966, residents came together to form a neighborhood organization, Summerhill Neighborhood Inc. Eventually, residents recognized the need for an entity to bring quality low and moderate-income housing to the neighborhood. Since 1991, SNDC has developed over 150 low-income homes in the neighborhood with various construction and family partners, embodying our mission to establish programs and partnerships that inspire, educate, empower, and advocate with residents to strengthen the Summerhill community. SNDC has proudly served as the development catalyst for many projects including Greenlea Commons, The Orchard Subdivision, Terry Place, Richmond Heights, a hotel, and other projects. OUR TRACK RECORD OF SERVICES In addition to development efforts, Summerhill Neighborhood Development Corporation operates several programs, including:  Provided trips to the grocery twice a month for seniors and low-income families without cars, allowing families access to fresh produce and wholesome foods at affordable prices (Summerhill is classified as a “food desert” by the USDA).  A community center with access to a computer lab opened daily to any resident during office hours. The lab provides a place for students without access to computers to complete homework, as well as a place for adults seeking to become familiar and proficient with computer technology.  Summerhill Neighborhood Reunion, which brings together new, tenured, and former residents to build community and establish and re-establish relationships. SNDC is solely responsible for the event, which attracts hundreds, including public officials as well as business and community leaders.  After school tutoring, which provides elementary- and middle-school aged students with at least one hour of assistance with homework per child and a healthy snack. In addition to assisting in meeting children’s educational needs, this also provides a safe afterschool environment for children whose parents may not be to afford alternate aftercare options.  Senior Socials, which provide outings and activities to our senior population.

MOVING FORWARD We have recently embraced a new purpose going forward articulated as: Together, we build our community, advocate for ALL residents, and keep our culture alive!

And a set of core values that include:

We Care We Serve We Organize We Support We Unite

MAKING OUR CASE SNDCisa long-standingcommunitydevelopmentorganizationwithatrack recordofcommitment, impact and neighborhood uplift. We bring that rich history and organizational performance to a renewed purpose and vision – encouraged by the new challenges of our neighborhood and recharged by the opportunity to leave a sustained legacy of community stewardship, neighbor relationships and overall well-being. Problem or Need Summerhill has a rich cross section of neighbors – new and legacy residents with racial and ethnic diversity across generations and wide ranges of financial and social classes. This current broad diversity when seen through this historical lens of profound redlining, gentrification and systems of bias and racism that framed Atlanta’s neighborhoods represents a sizable and undisputable need and opportunity to build community – and to do so with focused intention. There is a clear and compelling need to develop our community inclusive of old and new neighbors and businesses while connecting our rich history to our promising future. As Summerhill continues to emerge as a favorite neighborhood in Atlanta and across the Southeast region, it is significantly well positioned to emerge as the prototype for Dr. King’s beloved community. Dr. King’s Beloved Community is a global vision, in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. We will use this as an inspiration and vision for the future of Summerhill. Project Goal(s) and Objective(s) SNDC is on a mission to develop our community through a strategic plan that advances policy, affordable housing advocacy, good neighbors in the know, wellness, a centered community, powerful partnerships, a celebrated Summerhill place and brand and a keeper and teller of our story. To ignite this effort, we are mobilizing around these objectives for the Summerhill Community Unity Festival:  Build trust and relationship with and between legacy and new residents.  Share rich Summerhill stories and history with residents visually and written to enhance the knowledge with Summerhill residents, community, stakeholders, and visitors.  Promote and build awareness of local small businesses.  Promote and build unity in our community by creating an atmosphere that will start conversations and build relationships with residents and other stakeholders.  Develop and distribute business directory of Summerhill businesses.  Develop and execute activities with intention that will involve ALL residents, current and former.

Organized Neighbors of Summerhill – ONS Working to Educate, Motivate and Empower Citizens for Community Change P.O. Box 50281, Atlanta, GA. 30302

February 7, 2022

LETTER OF SUPPORT Dear Stadium Neighborhood Community Trust Fund Committee:

The Organized Neighbors of Summerhill (ONS), Summerhill’s neighborhood association of residents and homeowners, is pleased to issue this letter of support for the Summerhill Neighborhood Development Corporation’s (SNDC) application to The Trust to host an unprecedented post-COVID neighborhood celebration and reunion. Unfortunately, because of COVID, SNDC has been unable to produce its annual event for the past two years. ONS has worked with SNDC to co sponsor this and other community activities in past years and would enthusiastically partner on such an event should funding be granted. SNDC recently completed a strategic plan in which ONS was a part of the planning process. We are excited about the future work we can accomplish together. SNDC plays an important role in preserving the history and legacy of not only our Summerhill community, but our surrounding neighborhoods covered under the purview of The Trust. SNDC’s outreach fulfills a unique need with a valuable service-specifically, engaging our senior and youth neighbors. Given these circumstances, we are happy to support the proposal and partner with SNDC for a community festival that will strengthen community engagement, celebrate both the history and future

of our community, and galvanize neighbors towards greater involvement. Please feel free to contact me at 404-219-2081 should you have any questions. Sincerely, John Helton John Helton, President Organized Neighbors of Summerhill (ONS)
