Team Ariane runs against childhood cancer
End Kid’s Cancer. %ey run, inspired by the example of Ariane Delorme, an Embrun girl who was a&icted with a brain tumor several years ago but, thanks to treatment, is alive and well and living as large as she can, enjoying life as a high school junior now and multi-tasking her creative spirit through a variety of artistic endeavours ranging from drawing to drama to scribbling song lyrics to sing. “I’d like to be on stage,” Ariane said. “It (arts) is a way to show your emotions.” %e Great Canadian Run is an annual event taking place during the year in several cities across the country. %e Ottawa leg of the event began early in themorning of Oct. 3 from the Canadian Air and SpaceMuseum, with teams of runners going in relays from there for 100 kilometres through Ottawa and Orléans, into Cumberland and Rockland, in the end taking a brief respite with the ferry crossing of the Ottawa River to !nish up at ChâteauMontebello in Québec. One ultra- marathoner did the entire run on his own as a solo team entered in the event. Every member of TeamAriane ran toge- ther for the !rst 500metres of the run before breaking up into relays of one or two run- ners each, carrying the electronic “baton” to pass on when they !nished their assigned leg. Everyone did more than one leg of the run, of varying lengths. Jacynthe Dupuis completed four legs herself for a total of 30 kilometres for TeamAriane, her second year with the group. “It went really well,” she said, regarding the weekend. “We raised $6500.” Team Ariane’s total goes with the rest of the $215,000 raised this year from the Ottawa Great Canadian Run to help support research into children’s cancer. Véronique Chiasson, Ariane’s mother, has been part of TeamAriane since it formed in 2012 and run each year. %is year a foot injury sidelined her, but she still took part as driver of the support van for other members out on the road during their relays. “At the reception at the end, we were all crying,” Chiasson said. “It’s a very emotional day. But it’s also a happy day. It’s a day that we all get to spend together.” Led by %e Captain, whose name is wit- hheld for reasons of security, this year’s Team Ariane includes Noella Despres, Andy Coughlin, Jamie Coughlin, Darrell de Grandment, Jacynthe Dupuis, Lynn Ferron, Margaret Jackson, and Shelley True, with Véronique Chiasson as support driver, and Ariane Delorme as inspiration.
