Understanding that real change begins at the grassroots level, the coalition places immense emphasis on community engagement. They organized a series of town hall-style talks around the bond campaign and the comprehensive land use initiative called ForwardDallas. "It gives residents—renters and homeowners—the opportunity to better understand the issues so they themselves can be a part of advocating for their neighborhoods," Billy shares. "An organization like ours partnering with the Housing Coalition brings the conversation closer to the communities we serve." Ashley underscores the impact of mobilizing community members. "We've been able to activate our members to show up at City Hall for advocacy alerts, host rallies during the bond process," she says. "Those are huge success stories because this type of organizing just doesn't happen that often in Dallas."
Overcoming Challenges with Tenacity
The path to progress is rarely smooth, and the coalition has faced its share of obstacles. Building political support, addressing mistrust in local government, and navigating leadership changes are ongoing challenges. "At the beginning, it was about explaining why this is a worthy return on investment for the city," Bryan acknowledges. "We do want to be an accountability force and help lead to a more transparent government."
