SUMMER SESSIONS Dungeons and Dragons Social Skills Group

Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is a tabletop role-playing game that has been played since its inception in the 1970s. The goal of the game is to collaboratively tell a story that everyone gets to contribute to – there’s no winning or losing. As the story progresses, players must work together to defeat monsters, solve puzzles, and find treasure, while the Game Master (GM) acts as a referee/moderator and sets the scene for the players. If your 11-12 year-old child is imaginative, enjoys fantasy, and/or struggles with social skills, they may be a good fit for this group. Gained skills and more about the group:

Slingerland Intensives

If your child has been struggling with reading, spelling, writing, and/or handwriting, Slingerland's multisensory, structured, sequential, and simultaneous teaching approach can help to create the connections your child needs to succeed. This intensive, 10-hour summer course will be tailored to your child's needs and can focus on teaching and reinforcing handwriting, decoding, fluency, comprehension, encoding, and basic writing skills and will help maintain literacy skills typically lost in summer. Students may choose to sign up for one or both two-week sessions.

SUMMER SESSIONS Lindamood Bell Seeing Stars Intensives

For over 35 years, Lindamood-Bell has been improving the lives of students. This evidence-based program helps develop the skills necessary for reading and comprehension. Explicit instruction in these foundational skills will not only help students meet their reading potential, but also help boost their self esteem. The Seeing Stars program helps to strengthen phonemic awareness, word attack, word recognition, spelling, and contextual reading fluency. This is 1:1 Lindamood- Bell instruction tailored to your child’s level and reading profile. It will take place for 55 minutes each day, over one-week. SUMMER SESSIONS Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Summer Book Club Does your child struggle with a basic understanding of emotions and emotional expression? Have you noticed they need more support in talking about emotions and understanding their emotional responses? If you have a child who struggles with emotions and loves books, then this group may be a good fit. This bibliotherapy group uses children’s books to support social emotional learning (SEL). Each session, the group will read a book featuring a different emotion, will reflect on the story and skills they learned, and will participate in different art and play activities related to the emotion. SUMMER SESSIONS Middle School Friendship Summer Bootcamp Does your teen/tween struggle with making and keeping friends? Socializing in middle school can be challenging for many reasons: social anxiety, loneliness, cliques, jealousy, gossip, social media, bullying and peer pressure can all play a part. While friendships can sometimes be difficult to navigate, middle school students who have strong, healthy, long-term friendships will be better equipped to handle the other challenges associated with middle school. Is your child struggling with the basic foundational skills of making friends? Play and art-based social skills group will focus on providing them with instruction on the building blocks of friendship. In this group, children will be able to learn about and practice the communication, engagement, regulation, and interpersonal skills that are needed to form meaningful relationships with peers. This group is farm themed, so each session, your child will be introduced to an animal that teaches them about a new helpful skill.

EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING SESSIONS Executive Functioning Skills for Middle Schoolers Middle school is a huge transition for many students and places a high demand on organizational skills, attentional control, planning, initiation, and emotional control. This group is focused on development of the executive functioning skills most salient to middle schoolers so that they can navigate numerous classes, extracurricular activities, and social interactions effectively. Students will learn through group discussion, games, group projects, art, videos, individual writing/reflection, and direct feedback. With a backdrop of growth mindset and neuroplasticity, students will learn and practice skills. Gained skills and more about the group:

Introduction to Executive Functioning

In fourth and fifth grade, teachers begin reducing external support and expect their students to rise to the increased demands. However, some students benefit from more explicit instruction, modeling, and practice before they can successfully meet those demands without support. This group focuses on introducing developmentally appropriate executive functioning skills for older elementary students through games, group challenges, art, videos, storytelling, group discussion, individual writing/reflection, and direct feedback.

Meeting the demands of high school requires integration of a wide variety of executive functioning skills. In this group, students will learn and then apply developmentally appropriate executive functioning strategies and tools to the areas they are struggling in most. Through group discussion, games, group projects, art, videos, individual writing/reflection, and direct feedback, students will learn about what they can do to be more self-sufficient in high school and beyond. Master’s in Literacy and Language Education ADRIA FLORES 1. My go-to vacation spot is the San Diego area. I love the beach, the food, and all the fun activities! 2. My favorite summertime treat is ice cream. Yum! 3. I have to roll down the window and sing when I hear "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. 4. My favorite summer activity is anything to do with water. I love to swim, kayak, and hang out at the beach. 1. My favorite vacation spot in the summer is being outdoors in Tahoe with my family. 2. My favorite summertime treat is a perfectly ripe watermelon (sprinkled with sea salt!) 3. The summertime song that makes me sing is "Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus. 4. The activity I look forward to most in the summer is reading my book, while staring at the ocean.

1. For more than 30 years, I’ve traveled with my family to Martha’s Vineyard, a tiny island off the coast of Massachusetts. It’s my happiest place! 2. Lobster rolls (always happy to engage in a Maine style vs. Connecticut style debate) 3. Summer song: Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac 4. My annual summer highlight is the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair! It involves a fierce competition for best home-grown veggies, flowers, baked goods, and more. I was excited to squeak out a blue ribbon for my grapefruit olive oil pistachio cake last summer :)
