Lifeguard Prep Class

NEW

Recreation Services Staff The purpose of this class is to give potential Lifeguard candidates the opportunity to practice the various prerequisite items that they are tested on during the Prerequisite Test of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course in order to be eligible to participate in the course. The Prerequisite Test consists of the following: 1. Jump in the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards. After swimming 150 yards, maintain position at the water’s surface without support for 2 minutes by treading using only your legs (arms must be tucked under armpits and head must remain above the water’s surface). After maintaining a position at the water’s surface for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards. While swimming, you must swim continuously, keeping your face in the water and demonstrating good breath control. You may use front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed for this part of the prerequisites. 2. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface-dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, and return to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. This specific test must be completed in its entirety within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Note: When returning to the starting point, each participant must be able to hold the 10-pound object with both hands, placing it on their chest and keeping their face above water. Each participant must exit the water using their own strength (participants may NOT use goggles during this skill). Potential Lifeguard candidates may participate in the Lifeguard Prep Class as many times as they wish before participating in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course.
