ICE DAM SAFETY

Property owners are responsible for their own sump pump maintenance. The section of the Dublin City Code that covers this responsibility is Building Code Section 150.040. Grading and Draining Building Lots (G) Foundation sump pump drains are to be connected to an appropriate drainage outlet (such as the street, storm sewer or other outlet) to the satisfaction of the Municipal Engineer. How you can prevent ice dams: • Break up the ice in the curb line with shovels and salt • Disconnect the sump pump cap at the exterior wall of the house, allowing the water to discharge into your lawn temporarily • Relocate the connection from the curb line to the curb and gutter inlets, catch basins, manholes, rivers, ditches, streams, channels, detention ponds, retention ponds, etc. • Request City of Dublin Public Service team spread salt in the curb area. Notice: The connection relocation cost is the responsibility of the property owner. This relocation work needs to be coordinated with City of Dublin Engineering team, as this work involves a permitting process. Salt service will be provided during the first winter season of notification. After that, the resident must take the necessary steps outlined above to remedy the condition created by their sump pump drain before the next winter season. For more information, residents may reach the City’s Public Service team 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays by calling 614.410.4750 or visit our website at DublinOhioUSA.gov/snowgo .

Residents are required to keep their sidewalks, curbs and gutters free of snow, ice, debris and obstructions. Depositing snow or ice on any public sidewalk, street, bike path, road or highway is not allowed.

In freezing weather, basement sump pumps that outlet to the curb can create ice dams near mailboxes, driveways, etc., which can be a safety concern for many residents.
