ing to preliminary figures, reflecting the heavy im- pact on the industry of high energy prices and an abrupt slowdown of the European economy during the second half of the past year. Total production in 2022 reached 84.8 million tons, with a decrease reported in almost all paper and board grades with the notable exception of household and sanitary grades. At the same time, consumption of paper has remained stable in spite of the EU’s economic slowdown, its GDP growing by 0.3 percent in the third quarter and stagnating during the last quarter of 2022 according to the latest estimates. The EU economy is now forecast to grow only by 0.8 percent in 2023 and by 1.6 percent in 2024. The difference between a decreased production and a stable consumption resulted in a strong ero- sion of the paper trade balance. However, the de- crease in production was also observed in the larg- est producing countries worldwide. Canada, Japan, the United States and South Korea, recorded paper production falls ranging between 0.5 percent and 3.5 percent. In Europe, the downward trend can be attributed to a number of factors, chief amongst them being the cost of energy, which has forced many mills to temporarily stop their machines. In terms of individual paper grades, the structur- European Paper, Board (Cont’d from Page 1)

al divergence in the production trends for graph- ic grades and packaging as well as sanitary and household grades continued in 2022. The utilization of paper for recycling by compa- nies in the geographic area covered by Cepi mem- bers decreased by 6.4 percent compared to 2021. High electricity and gas prices have significantly affected recycling mills and non-integrated paper mills especially in the second half of 2022. Paper recycling is even more than before performed in Europe, with 96 percent of European paper for recycling being recycled by European paper mills, while at the same time exports went down by close to 10 percent, partly due to extended lockdowns in Asia. Consumption Stable The overall consumption of paper and board in Cepi countries in 2022 remained stable compared to 2021, based on the latest data available. It ben- efited from the favorable economic environment observed during the first half of the year, which was then followed by the abrupt slowing down of the economy during the second half. As a result of recent consumption pattern changes, demand for sanitary and household grades has grown by3.6 percent in 2022.

AICC Launches Savings Program For Members AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, is bringing members savings through a new affinity partnership with AICC member, Procure Analytics. Procure Analytics, a group purchasing consultan- cy that manages indirect categories for more than 1,000 member companies with $1.5 billion in con- trolled spend, can offer members strategic sourc- ing, cost reduction, and tail spend management. Complex Challenges Procure Analytics was founded to address the complex challenges of a frequently ignored indirect spend category – Maintenance, Repair and Opera- tions Supplies (MRO). The nature of MRO supplies (millions of SKUs, thousands of individual transactions, hundreds of potential suppliers and the relatively small cost for individual products) make MRO an under-managed category within most organizations. Procure Analytics has since broadened its port- folio of savings programs to address a number of other under-managed indirect spend categories in- cluding freight services, pallets, uniforms and rental garments, corporate travel, and many others.

The production of packaging grades is estimated to have decreased by 4.6 percent compared to 2021. Within packaging grades, case materials – mainly used for transport packaging and corrugated boxes recorded a decrease of 4.8 percent. The output of carton board plus other packaging board – mainly used for retail packaging – decreased by 4.1 per- cent. The production of wrapping grades – used for paper bag production – decreased by 5.2 percent. Packaging Grades The share of packaging grades accounted for 59.8 percent (59.1 percent in 2021) of the total paper and board production, with graphic grades accounting for 26.1 percent (27.7 percent in 2021). Output of all other grades of paper and board – mainly for industrial and special purposes – decreased by 6.1 percent, with a share of 4.8 percent of total paper and board production. Sanitary and household paper output increased by about 2.2 percent compared to 2021, to levels close to those reached during the Covid crisis and accounted for 9.3 percent of total paper and board production. The production of graphic grades fell by 11.3 per- cent. After an uptick in 2021, it seems now back on a downward trend. Newsprint decreased by 9.9 per- cent whilst printing and writing papers decreased by 11.5 percent, as a result of machine closures and conversions. The production of printing and writing papers decreased at different rates depending on precise grade categories. Output of coated mechanical pa- per and uncoated mechanical paper decreased by 19.5 percent and 13.2 percent respectively. FIA Shadow Board Created To Attract Young Talent The UK’s Flexographic Industry Association (FIA) has appointed a Shadow Board, comprised of young flexo industry members, aged between 25 and 35, that it hopes will further the goal of encouraging young talent into the flexo sector. Mirroring the main FIA board, the Shadow Board will provide the young flexo professionals with a voice on the future of the industry and provide a younger viewpoint on communication going for- ward. It will be responsible for driving and man- aging key projects that align with the long-term goals of the flexo sector, and will feed into the main FIA board. “The flexo industry, as well as the wider printing and packaging industry, is facing a real challenge in attracting the next generation of professionals,” said Debbie Waldron-Hoines, consultant CEO of the Board. “As a result, we see ‘brain drain’; a lot of our legacy knowledge and hard-won expertise natural- ly ageing out of the workforce. Of course, we know the flexographic industry as an exciting, dynamic and advanced sector – but typically, we have not communicated that very well and now see a real shortfall in people joining the industry. “By appointing a Shadow Board comprising indi- viduals aged 25-35, we are further playing our part in securing the future of flexo, guiding its ongoing momentum and replenishing the talent pool. For us, it is about giving young flexographic printing profes- sionals a voice and seeing challenges through their lens. They are the future of the industry, so naturally we want to give them hands-on experience of long- term industry projects with real weight and get their perspective on how we can build a stronger talent attraction and retention pipeline.” Companies represented on the Shadow Board include staff from Sun Chemical, Smurfit Kappa, Siegwerk, Sandon Global, Absolute Engineering and Nelipak.

and board deliveries for the year decreased by 3.3 percent compared to 2021, and exports to countries outside of Cepi’s membership by 13.3 percent. This reflects last year’s paper production decline in Europe, which particularly impacted exports, and the global slowdown in economic growth. By the end of September 2022, deliveries of graphic grades had decreased by 10.1 percent whilst deliveries of packaging grades slightly de- creased by 1 percent. Exports decreased by 13.3 percent by the end of September 2022, recording a huge decline in al- most all regions: European neighboring countries -10.5 percent, North America -2.0 percent, Latin America -8.9 percent, Asia -27.9 percent, and other countries of the world -9.7 percent. In terms of market share, other European coun- tries remain the main markets for exports with 38.1 percent of total European exports; Asia accounts for 20.3 percent, North America 15.0 percent, Latin America 9.8 percent, and all other countries 16.8 percent. Imports Increase Preliminary indications show that imports of paper and board into Cepi member countries in- creased by around 6.8 percent compared to 2021, with increasing volumes coming from other Euro- pean countries (+21.8 percent). Other European countries, not represented in Cepi’s membership, account for 47.4 percent of all European imports, North America 23.6 percent, Asia 16.9 percent, Lat- in America 8.0 percent and the rest of the world 4.1 percent. The trade with Russia was impacted by the sanc- tions adopted by the EU; EU paper exports declined by 68 percent while paper imports went down by 35 percent. Overall, the trade balance of paper and board has decreased by 20 percent compared to 2021, but remains positive. Both total pulp and market pulp production de- creased by 3.7 percent. The production of pulp (integrated + market) has decreased by 3.7 percent compared to the previous year, with a total output of approximately 35.9 mil- lion tons. It was impacted by temporary downtimes and strikes at the beginning of 2022. Output of mechanical pulp decreased by 5.4 per- cent, whilst production of chemical pulp fell by 3.3 percent compared to 2021. Chemical pulp accounts for 77 percent of total pulp production. Output of market pulp also showed a decrease of 3.7 percent.

It is the fifth such acquisition since Excelitas was acquired by AEA Investors in December 2017.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, labelstock demand in Europe dropped sharply, after a poor first half of the year caused by strike related paper shortages from Finland, and a rebound in the third quarter, according to a new report from FINAT. For the year as a whole, European self-adhesive labelstock de- mand decreased by 4.7 percent compared to 2021. Compared to the fourth quarter in 2021, European consumption of paper and filmic roll labelstocks decreased by no less than 24 percent, the sharpest year-on-year decline in a single quarter recorded since FINAT commissioned the collection of quar- terly statistics in 2003. The contraction in demand, according to the re- port, is a correction of the ‘erratic’ market behavior in the previous three quarters that started with the long lasting paper strike in Finland in the period till Easter, the resulting paper shortages and in- creasing lead times, the refilling of label converter warehouses in the third quarter and the mounting general economic uncertainty in the intermediate period caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, rising energy and raw materials costs, rising interest rates and a looming recession due to losses in dis-

Having identified the global demand for Keller Dorian and Panhuizen’s products, Apex has invest- ed over $20 million in the past 18 months in em- bossing technology. Both Keller Dorian and Panhuizen will now fall under the Apex Embossing name. WPO Guide Now Available In Arabic, Spanish, Czech The World Packaging Organization has confirmed that the Global Packaging Design for Recycling Guide has been translated into three additional lan- guages to help even more packaging technologists to design out waste at the start. “In order to be able to apply recyclable packag- ing design, a certain fundamental knowledge of sorting and recycling processes is necessary,” said Nerida Kelton, Vice President Sustainability & Save Food, WPO. “Packaging must, therefore, be suitable for state-of-the-art sorting and recycling processes in addition to its basic functions, such as storage, transport, product protection, product presentation and convenience.” ‘Translating the ‘Global Packaging Design for Re- cycling Guide’ into Arabic was extremely important to ensure that we take steady steps based on sci- entific foundations to achieve a circular economy. This will contribute to addressing challenges that face the world in terms of climate change, the envi- ronment and the preservation of natural resources”, stated Ayman Sbeih, Chairman of PFPPI and coor- dinator of the Arabic translation. “The Spanish version, together with a wide range of initiatives that IAE and CENEM already undertake, will undoubtedly contribute to stimulating discus- sion, awareness and education in the circular econ- omy, the environment and sustainability,” said Silvio Colombo, Argentine Packaging Institute (IAE). The new translations are available for free to download on the WPO website https://www. worldpackaging.org/wpo/45/ .
