Satya Nadella: Transformational Role Integration

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella offers a contrasting model of how lead- ers can integrate seemingly contradictory roles. When Nadella took the helm in 2014, Microsoft was struggling with competing priorities and internal competition. Rather than forcing a false unity, Nadella embraced the company’s multifaceted identity while providing an integrating pur- pose: “empowering every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.” This purpose allowed Windows, Office, Azure, Xbox, and other di- visions to maintain distinct identities while contributing to a coherent whole. Nadella himself models role integration by functioning simultane- ously as technical visionary, culture transformer, and strategic dealmaker. His leadership approach explicitly acknowledges that these different roles require different capabilities and mindsets. The result has been remarkable - Microsoft’s market value has in- creased more than sixfold under Nadella’s leadership, precisely because the company stopped forcing artificial unity and started respecting its inherent multiplicity.

Sara Blakely: Founder-CEO-Investor Integration

Spanx founder Sara Blakely represents yet another approach to role multiplicity. Beginning as a solo entrepreneur selling undergarments from her apartment, Blakely has evolved through multiple roles: product devel- oper, CEO, brand ambassador, investor, and philanthropist. Rather than
