The Next Next Common Sense - TEXT

Michael Lissack

• Communicate your availability and response expectations to key stakeholders in each role

The goal isn't rigid separation but rather mindful connection among roles, with appropriate boundaries where needed.

4. Practice Mindful Transitions

The spaces between roles deserve as much attention as the roles them- selves. When shifting contexts:

• Take a moment to consciously acknowledge the transition • Reset your attention and priorities for the new context • Carry forward only what's valuable from the previous context • Use physical or digital cues to signal the transition to yourself and others

These transition practices prevent roles from bleeding inappropriately into each other while still allowing for meaningful integration.

5. Communicate Boundaries with Compassion

Clear, compassionate communication about role boundaries protects your effectiveness in all contexts:

• Explain your availability and limitations to key stakeholders • Frame boundaries as enabling better service rather than as restrictions • Create shared understanding about priority interruptions • Offer alternatives when you can't be immediately responsive in a particular role • Express gratitude when others respect your boundaries
