The Next Next Common Sense
The canyon creates a balance between two extremes. On one hand, we have rigid, inflexible systems where every action is prescribed and controlled. Like a highly engineered canal, these systems efficiently move resources in predictable ways but cannot adapt to changing conditions. On the other hand, we encounter completely unconstrained environments where action can go in any direction without guidance. Like a river with- out banks, these systems often dissipate energy without focused impact. The canyon provides a third way: clear boundaries that channel en- ergy while allowing tremendous freedom and adaptability within those boundaries. This approach creates what complexity scientists call “en- abling constraints”—limitations that paradoxically increase creative pos- sibilities rather than diminish them. From Physical to Digital Canyons In traditional organizations, canyons were often physical and visi- ble: office layouts, organizational charts, and policy manuals. In today’s digitally-mediated work, canyons take new forms. We now see digital architectures—systems and platforms that guide behavior while enabling flexibility. Algorithms provide guidelines that suggest rather than dictate actions. Cultural principles create shared values and norms that shape behavior across distributed teams. Decision frameworks establish clear parameters for autonomous decision-making. These digital canyons serve the same purpose as their physical coun- terparts: they provide enough structure to channel collective energy while allowing enough freedom for adaptation, creativity, and personal agency. The Power of Values-Based Guardrails At the heart of effective canyon-building lies a shift from rule-based to values-based approaches. Consider this contrast: In a canal-like orga- nization, customer interactions must follow a precise 12-step process, all emails require response within exactly four hours, new features need
