Leading organizations use these algorithmic capabilities not to re- place human intelligence but to direct human attention toward potentially significant developments that merit deeper investigation. The algorithms don't make strategic decisions—they expand what humans can perceive and consider. Walmart provides an instructive example of this approach. Their al- gorithmic systems continuously monitor hundreds of variables including weather patterns, social media trends, economic indicators, and internal sales data. When these systems detect potential correlations or anomalies, they flag them for human investigation rather than automatically imple- menting changes. This human-algorithm partnership allows Walmart to identify non-obvious relationships (like the correlation between hurri- cane warnings and strawberry Pop-Tart sales) while avoiding the pitfalls of purely automated decision-making.
