The Next Next Common Sense - TEXT

Michael Lissack

In complex digital landscapes, this capacity isn’t merely advanta- geous—it’s existential. Organizations that develop robust intelligence capabilities can navigate complexity with coherence, anticipating emerg- ing developments rather than merely reacting to them. Those that fail to develop these capabilities will increasingly find themselves disoriented by accelerating change, struggling to make sense of transformations only visible in retrospect. The next common sense recognizes that in complex environments, effective intelligence gathering isn’t about perfect prediction or complete understanding. It’s about cultivating the collective capacity to navigate uncertainty with wisdom, curiosity, and resilience. It’s about creating learning systems that continuously explore both within familiar territo- ries and beyond them, integrating diverse perspectives into evolving un- derstanding. And it’s about maintaining coherence amid complexity not through rigid control but through shared exploration of an ever-changing landscape. The organizations that thrive won’t be those that know everything, but those that recognize what they don’t know—and develop the capacity to learn faster than their environments change. They’ll transform intel- ligence gathering from a specialized function into a fundamental aspect of organizational identity—becoming perpetual explorers rather than merely sending out scouts.
