The Next Next Common Sense
opportunities that human managers might miss. As these capabilities evolve, they’ll likely create increasingly sophisticated partnership be- tween human and algorithmic recognition judgment.
Integration of Purpose and Impact
Recognition systems are evolving beyond acknowledging activity to connecting contribution with meaningful impact. This evolution reflects growing understanding that people find deepest motivation not from ac- knowledgment alone but from seeing how their work creates meaningful difference. Unilever’s “Sustainable Living Plan” recognition exemplifies this im- pact integration, explicitly connecting individual and team contributions to measurable progress on sustainability goals. As these approaches ma- ture, recognition increasingly serves not just to acknowledge past contri- bution but to create meaning by connecting work to purpose. Conclusion: Toward Coherent Recognition The transformation of organizational signposts from physical markers to digital systems creates both unprecedented challenges and remarkable opportunities. The fundamental human needs for recognition, orienta- tion, and appropriate boundaries haven’t disappeared in digital environ- ments—they’ve evolved into new forms requiring thoughtful attention. The most effective organizations recognize that digital signposts and recognition systems aren’t merely administrative processes but funda- mental shapers of organizational culture, behavior, and identity. How we acknowledge contribution inevitably influences what gets contributed. How we establish boundaries shapes what gets shared or protected. And how we create orientation determines how people navigate increasingly complex environments. Looking ahead, the most promising approaches will likely emphasize what might be called “coherent recognition”—acknowledgment systems
