We’ll also offer guidance on assessing readiness to move between steps, recognizing that this journey rarely follows a perfectly linear progression. Let’s explore how these five steps manifest in today’s organizational landscape and how your organization can navigate the inevitable imple- mentation challenges that arise along the way. Step 1: Identify yourself and your goals In today’s business landscape, identifying purpose has become central to organizational identity. Companies like Patagonia, with their mission to “save our home planet,” demonstrate how purpose creates coherence in every decision. This coherence manifests not just in sustainability ini- tiatives but in product design, supply chain management, and even their groundbreaking 2022 decision to transfer ownership to a trust dedicated to fighting climate change. This step begins with a fundamental question: Who are we, and what do we aim to accomplish? The answer forms the foundation upon which all other elements of coherence are built. Purpose has evolved from marketing slogan to strategic imperative, shaping culture, attracting talent, and building customer loyalty.
