A healthcare organization we worked with encountered significant employee skepticism when launch- ing its new purpose statement, with staff dismissing it as “the slogan of the month.” Solution Approach: Rather than beginning with purpose pro- nouncements, the organization started with purpose discovery—engag- ing employees in identifying the meaningful impact they already created. They documented actual patient outcome stories and used these as the foundation for articulating their collective purpose. By starting with ex- isting meaning rather than imposed messaging, they transformed skepti- cism into engagement. The purpose that emerged felt authentic precisely because it reflected what already mattered most to people throughout the organization. Challenge: Short-Term Performance Pressure Organizations often struggle to maintain purpose focus when facing short-term financial pres- sures. A retail company abandoned key sustainability initiatives during a quarterly earnings shortfall, undermining the credibility of their envi- ronmental purpose. Solution Approach: Companies that successfully maintain purpose through financial challenges explicitly define “non-negotiable purpose commitments” that remain protected even during downturns. Outdoor retailer REI designates certain sustainability and employee well-being practices as core to identity rather than optional initiatives, preventing purpose erosion during challenging periods.
