Implementation Challenges for Step 5 Effective communication implementation faces several significant challenges: Challenge: Attention Scarcity As communication volume increases, organizations struggle to ensure important messages receive appropriate attention. A global consumer goods company discovered that critical stra- tegic communications were being lost among hundreds of other messages, with employees reporting they simply couldn't process the volume of information being sent. Solution Approach: Organizations effectively addressing this chal- lenge implement "attention respect systems" that deliberately manage the cognitive load their communications create. The consumer goods com- pany established a "communication hierarchy" that explicitly categorized messages by importance and required action, created a "communication calendar" that coordinated messaging across departments to prevent over- load, and implemented a "clarity standard" requiring all communications to indicate purpose, required action, and time sensitivity in standardized formats. This respectful approach created coherence by ensuring attention focused on truly important communications rather than being exhausted by undifferentiated volume. Challenge: Channel Fragmentation As organizations adopt mul- tiple communication platforms, messages often become scattered across channels, creating both duplication and gaps.
