The Next Next Common Sense - TEXT

Chapter 14 Measuring Complexity Mastery H ow do we know if we're successfully mastering complexity? In previous chapters, we've explored the philosophical foun- dations of coherence and outlined a five-step approach for creating it within organizations. Now we turn to a critical question: How can we measure our progress toward complexity mastery? This chapter addresses the challenge of assessment in a complex world. Traditional metrics often capture what's easily quantifiable rather than what's truly important. They focus on outputs rather than outcomes, on discrete elements rather than systemic patterns. To effectively measure complexity mastery, we need approaches that match the nature of complex systems themselves—adaptive, interconnected, and emergent. We'll examine key indicators of organizational coherence, explore tools for assessing complexity navigation capability, and consider the bal- ance between qualitative and quantitative measures. We'll also discuss how to create feedback loops that enable continuous adaptation, position- ing complexity mastery as a competitive advantage in today's business environment.
