While previous chapters outlined the five steps for implementing the next common sense and ap- proaches for measuring complexity mastery, this chapter focuses on the critical role of leadership in bringing these elements together. In today’s interconnected world, leadership isn’t about heroic individ- uals issuing commands but about fostering environments where coher- ence can emerge through distributed action. The evolved leadership mind- set for complex environments requires new capabilities, approaches, and perspectives that differ markedly from traditional management models. This chapter explores how leaders create conditions for coherence, distribute leadership across networked organizations, build leadership capabilities at all levels, balance stability with dynamism, reconcile fun- damental tensions, create psychological safety, and develop coherent lead- ership teams.
