Leadership range expansion. Organizations deliberately extend individual leadership repertoires beyond natural preferences. When technology company IBM develops emerging leaders, it uses “Stretch Assignments” that deliberately place individuals in situations requiring leadership approaches outside their comfort zones, expanding their adap- tive range. Reflection discipline. Organizations build routines for examining leadership effectiveness rather than assuming continued relevance of past approaches. When consulting firm McKinsey develops partners, it incor- porates “Leadership Reflection” practices that create regular spaces for examining how leadership approaches need to evolve as contexts change. These approaches develop what leadership theorist Ronald Heifetz called “adaptive leadership”—the capacity to address challenges that re- quire learning and evolution rather than just technical expertise.

To build these capabilities systematically, organizations need struc- tured development programs that reflect the complexity leadership prin- ciples.
