The Next Next Common Sense

“The complexity comes from the dynamic nature of these relation- ships,” observes a technology leader. “They’re not static contractual ar- rangements. They’re evolving networks of interaction that need to adapt as technologies, markets, and participant capabilities change.” This ecosystem approach is becoming increasingly common across industries. Companies recognize that the most significant business oppor- tunities often lie at the intersection of traditional sectors—where health- care meets digital technology, where energy systems meet transportation infrastructure, where manufacturing meets consumer services. Narrative Intelligence in Ecosystem Leadership This ecosystem frontier connects directly to our discussion of nar- rative intelligence in Chapter 9. Organizations that effectively navigate ecosystem complexity are developing sophisticated narrative capabilities to create coherence across organizational boundaries: Origin narratives : They create compelling stories about how their ecosystems emerged and evolved, establishing shared context among di- verse participants. Cloud computing provider AWS develops narratives that explain how its partner ecosystem evolved from early experimen- tation to mature collaboration, helping new participants understand the ecosystem’s historical dynamics. Purpose narratives : They articulate how the ecosystem serves pur- poses beyond what any single organization could achieve. Healthcare plat- form Epic creates narratives that connect diverse participants—hospitals, insurers, technology providers, and patient advocates—around shared goals for healthcare transformation. Now narratives : They maintain real-time understanding of current ecosystem conditions through ongoing storytelling. Automotive ecosys- tem platform ACES (Autonomous, Connected, Electric, Shared) con- ducts regular “ecosystem narratives” sessions where participants share perspectives on current market conditions, regulatory developments, and technological advances.
