This has accelerated dramatically, with ecosystem models replacing clearly delin- eated organizational structures in many contexts. The centrality of purpose. The importance of shared purpose as a coordinating mechanism in complex environments was recognized in the original work. This has indeed become increasingly central to organiza- tional effectiveness as traditional control mechanisms have lost efficacy. What Has Been Surprising Several developments have emerged that were not clearly visible on the horizon in 1999: The pace of technological transformation. While technological change was clearly accelerating in 1999, the sheer pace and pervasiveness of digital transformation has exceeded most expectations. The smart- phone revolution, ubiquitous connectivity, and the integration of digital technologies into virtually every aspect of organizational and personal life represent a transformation more profound than anticipated. The complexity of global challenges. The interconnected nature of challenges like climate change, pandemic response, and economic in- equality has created complexity at scales that were difficult to envision. The ripple effects across systems and the emergence of unexpected feed- back loops have created navigation challenges of unprecedented difficulty. The polarization of discourse. Rather than creating greater shared understanding, increased connectivity has in many contexts led to
