Canals : Rigid, inflexible systems where every action is prescribed and controlled, allowing efficient resource movement but limiting adaptation to changing conditions. Coherence : An alignment of context, viewpoint, purpose, and action that enables further purposive action; the state of being logically and aesthet- ically consistent while maintaining the capacity for evolution. Coherence Mapping : A visual technique that reveals alignment between organizational elements, showing patterns of coherence and identifying misalignment. Complex Adaptive Systems : Systems characterized by numerous inter- connected elements with emergent properties that cannot be predicted from individual components, distinct from merely complicated systems. Complexity : The state of being interwoven or having multiple intercon- nected parts that create emergent properties beyond the sum of individual components (from Latin “plex” meaning “weave”).

Complicated : Having many intricate parts that can be folded together, distinct from complexity (from Latin “plic” meaning “fold”).

D

Decision Protocol Clarity : The explicit establishment of processes for different types of decisions, enabling distributed leadership without re- quiring universal consensus. Digital Twins : Detailed digital replicas of physical assets that enable sim- ulation, optimization, and predictive maintenance, creating bidirectional flow between physical and digital domains.
