Model Mapping Exercise

Purpose

To make explicit the mental models shaping perception and decision-making in a specific domain.

Process

1. Select a domain : Choose a specific area of focus (e.g., customer engagement, innovation process, market evolution). 2. Individual mapping : Each participant creates a visual represen- tation of how they understand this domain, including: ○ Key elements and relationships ○ Cause-effect assumptions

○ Success/failure determinants ○ Time horizons and boundaries

3. Model sharing : Participants present their maps, describing not just what they’ve included but why they’ve structured their un- derstanding this way. 4. Difference exploration : The group identifies differences in mod- els and explores the sources of these differences: ○ Different experiences ○ Different information sources ○ Different values or priorities ○ Different contextual assumptions 5. Integration exploration : Without forcing consensus, the group explores: ○ What can be learned from these different perspectives? ○ How might these models be complementary?
