Purpose
To uncover and examine the implicit assumptions that shape thinking and action.
Process
1. Select a challenge : Identify a current challenge or opportunity the group is addressing. 2. Surface assumptions : Participants list all assumptions about:
○ The nature of the problem/opportunity ○ Stakeholder perspectives and interests ○ Available resources and constraints ○ Cause-effect relationships ○ Success criteria
3. Categorize assumptions :
○ Known facts (verified with evidence) ○ Educated guesses (reasonable but unverified) ○ Implicit beliefs (unconsciously held) ○ Legacy assumptions (inherited from past experiences)
4. Test assumptions :
○ What evidence supports each assumption? ○ What would disprove each assumption?
