Purpose
To develop a set of simple, powerful guiding principles that can pro- vide direction while enabling adaptation to changing conditions.
Process
1. Context exploration : Examine the specific complexity frontiers facing the organization: ○ What challenges require both coherence and adaptability? ○ What environments require local responsiveness within global alignment? ○ What situations involve high uncertainty and rapid change? 2. Value identification : Clarify the core values that should inform principles: ○ What values are fundamental to organizational identity and purpose? ○ What values provide meaningful guidance across diverse situations? ○ What values resonate with key stakeholders? 3. Principle formulation : Draft potential guiding principles that: ○ Express core values in actionable terms ○ Provide meaningful guidance without excessive prescription ○ Balance clarity with flexibility ○ Address key tension points in the organization
