The Next Next Common Sense - TEXT

Michael Lissack these implicit patterns of thought and determining their impact on orga- nizational performance. Framework Components 1. Archetypal Mental Model Identification The first step is identifying which archetypal mental models dominate your organization. Common business archetypes include: • Mechanistic Models : The organization as a machine with pre- dictable inputs and outputs • Biological Models : The organization as a living organism that adapts and evolves • Network Models : The organization as an interconnected web of relationships • Military Models : The organization as a hierarchical command structure • Family Models : The organization as an interconnected so- cial unit • Market Models : The organization as a system of exchanges and transactions Assessment Method : Conduct language analysis of key organiza- tional documents (strategic plans, internal communications, meeting transcripts) and leadership statements. Count metaphors and analogies that reflect different archetypes. For example, phrases like "well-oiled machine," "streamlining operations," or "input-output efficiency" suggest mechanistic models. Application : Once you've identified dominant archetypes, create a visual map showing their relative influence across different organizational functions. This visualization helps identify where mental model misalign- ments might be creating friction.
