The Next Next Common Sense
2. Assumption Archaeology
This component excavates the hidden assumptions embedded in dominant mental models. Assessment Method : For each identified model, use a structured interview protocol with questions like: • "What must be true for this approach to work?" • "What are we taking for granted when we think this way?" • "What would challenge the foundations of this thinking?"
Document these assumptions and classify them as:
• Validated : Supported by substantial evidence • Plausible : Reasonable but not fully tested • Legacy : Historical assumptions that may no longer apply • Implicit : Unconscious assumptions that haven't been examined Application : Create an "assumption heat map" highlighting which assumptions carry the most risk if incorrect and which have the least sup- porting evidence. This identifies priority areas for testing and potential model refinement.
3. Boundary Examination
This component identifies where mental models artificially constrain thinking and action. Assessment Method : For key decision areas, document: • What options are automatically considered "off the table" • What stakeholders or data sources are routinely excluded • What time horizons are typically considered • What metrics are prioritized and which are ignored
