The Next Next Common Sense SOybssttermu cattiiocnI ins tt eMr veennt tai lo nMso fdoerl s Identifying obstructionist mental models is only the first step. Effective leaders must also develop systematic approaches to intervene when these models block necessary adaptation and innovation. Below are structured intervention methods for each type of obstructionist pattern:

Interventions for Categorical Thinking

1. Spectrum Reframing : Replace binary distinctions with con- tinuous spectrums. When someone states “This approach never works,” introduce a spectrum tool with prompts like: • "On a scale of 0-10, how well might this work in different scenarios?" • "Under what specific conditions might this approach be more or less effective?" 2. Exception Exploration : Systematically search for counter- examples that challenge categorical assertions. When facing ab- solute statements, implement a structured protocol: • Document the categorical claim ("We'll never win against Competitor X") • Assign a diverse team to find at least three counter-examples • Analyze what specific factors made those exceptions possible • Use these factors to develop targeted experiments Implementation Example : When a manufacturing company's lead- ership insisted additive manufacturing could "never" meet their quality standards, the CEO implemented an Exception Exploration protocol. A cross-functional team discovered three competitors successfully using the technology for specific components. This analysis led to a targeted pilot program that eventually transformed their production approach.
