The Next Next Common Sense - TEXT

introduction to Part 2 Building Blocks and Roles (Chapters 4-6) I n Part 2, we move from understanding complexity to working ef- fectively within it, exploring how organizations create coherence through thoughtful use of metaphors, components, and roles. These chapters provide practical approaches for structuring thinking and action in ways that embrace rather than resist the complex nature of modern organizational life. Chapter 4 introduces landscape metaphors as powerful cognitive tools for navigating complex environments. Our brains evolved primarily to solve spatial problems, with remarkably sophisticated neural machinery for processing landscape information. By deliberately employing land- scape imagery—hills, valleys, rivers, paths—we can leverage this innate spatial intelligence to perceive patterns and relationships in organizational contexts that might otherwise remain invisible. We explore how effective organizations use landscape metaphors to understand competitive dy- namics, innovation journeys, and strategic options. The “Grand Canyon” metaphor proves particularly valuable, showing how natural boundaries channel energy while allowing freedom within them—unlike the rigid control of engineered canals or the directionless flow of unbounded riv- ers. Through practical examples, we see how landscape thinking enables more intuitive navigation of complexity than abstract frameworks alone could provide.
