The Next Next Common Sense
Rather than forcing artificial unity or creating fragmented identities, ef- fective organizations help people maintain coherent self-understanding while transitioning between foreground and background roles as contexts change. Through practical guidelines, we learn to visualize our multiple roles, think of them as alterations of foreground and background, develop flexibility in role transitions, and create social support systems that ac- knowledge role complexity. Together, these chapters reveal how coherence emerges not from rigid structures or simplified models but from thoughtful combination of ele- ments, clear landscape understanding, and honest engagement with the multifaceted nature of human roles. They provide practical approaches for structuring thinking and action in ways that work with the grain of com- plexity rather than against it—creating patterns that enable purposeful action without denying the rich interconnections that define complex sys- tems. By leveraging spatial intelligence, combinatorial thinking, and au- thentic role understanding, organizations develop capabilities for navigat- ing complexity that prove far more effective than traditional management techniques designed for complicated but not truly complex environments.
