THE STORY The year was 1924. It was the heart of the Prohibition Era and wine’s darkest hour when it was outlawed and deemed unconstitutional. It was also the year our family first planted vineyards in California and farmed grapes that were sold to friends and neighbors. Story goes some of these grapes might have been used to make wine.

To create the Stella Rosa wines, our family chose the region of Asti, a province in Piedmont, Italy, as the source for its aromatic grapes, which have become the hallmark for the Stella Rosa style of wines. The area of Asti has particular significance to our family, as it is the birthplace of our family matriarch, Maddalena Riboli. Our first Stella Rosa wine was Moscato D’Asti, which has become a flagship of this line. Soon after, Stella Rosa Rosso was created – the brand’s first semi-sweet, semi-sparkling red wine blend, and first wine of its kind to be brought to America from Asti. The rapid phenomenal successes of these two wines began the lineage of Stella Rosa, which now boasts over 20 distinctive flavors.

The origins of the place named Caparzo are still unknown. According to some, the name is derived, as shown by ancient maps, from Ca’ Pazzo; according to others, the term should derive from the Latin Caput Arsum, indicating "a place touched by sun”. The history of Caparzo dates back to the end of the 1960s at the dawning of Brunello di Montalcino, when a group of friends, fond of Tuscany and of wine, purchased an old ruin with vineyards at Montalcino. The farm estate was renovated, modernized, and new vineyards were planted. In a short time, Caparzo made itself known in the Brunello market. In 1998, 30 years after the first rows of vines were planted, the farm estate came to a turning point when Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini purchased Caparzo. With the help of her son, Igino, and daughter, Alessandra, she immediately carried out her objective: combining tradition with innovation to create a high-quality wine that is the expression of an excellent territory.

Borgo Scopeto, located in the Sienese Borough of Castelnuovo Berardenga, was known as from 1079, according to what is reported by an ancient document of that time, as a fortified settlement belonging to the cathedral of Siena. The sighting tower in stone built in the thirteenth century is an evidence of its warlike past. In 1300 the farm was donated to the Sienese noble family called Sozzini that carried out the first big transformation from a military building to a villa. In a short time, the farm became a thriving farm centre mainly devoted to vine and olive growing. In the sixteenth century, Borgo Scopeto was an important theological conference centre which agreed with the theories of the Reformation. For this reason, the Sozzini family was persecuted for a long time by the Inquisition. However, the property continued to grow concentrating on wine production and only recently it started to bottle its own wines. The first bottle of Chianti Classico with the Borgo Scopeto label dates back to 1990.

v The Wolftrap is a project of Marc Kent and is produced at Boekenhoutskloof, established in 1776 in the furthest corner of the Franschhoek valley, once wild and untamed. A wolf trap was discovered on the property, hence the name “The Wolftrap.” While today, the mountains are still alive with indigenous animals, including the majestic leopard, no evidence of wolves has ever been found. A wine drawn from legend, The Wolftrap produces a red, a white, and a rosé wine from Rhône grape varietals and all certified sustainable by the Integrated Production of Wine.

Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for making fine furniture. Our Boekenhoutskloof label features seven chairs; amongst them the country-style split splat chair made in the neo-classical style with a shouldered top rail and thonged seat from the late 18th century. The chairs on our wine label all pay tribute to the skills of the 18th century craftsmen and their achievements in creating beauty from natural sources, just like the pursuit of fine wine-making.

Austin and his team know just how unique each part of Paso Robles can be. We seek out the vineyards from all over the Paso Robles AVA that best define Paso’s Cabernet Sauvignon. What you may find surprising is that east of the Salinas River, atop ancient flood plains and sea beds, is where we find the soils that drive the wine quality. Our region is well-known for its calcareous and limestone soils. We love them…in moderation. We find that a good combination of broken-down calcareous stones, disintegrated bedrock and gravel combined with loamy soils make magic! Some of our favorite vineyards are located within the Creston District and the Estrella District. Both are on the edges of ancient river beds where rocks wore down and mixed with the alluvial soils from the nearby hills. These special vineyard sites provide not only the right soil types and structure, but the right micro climate of warm days, cooling afternoon winds and cool nights. We thoughtfully direct the farming at theses vineyard sites to ensure the consistent quality of the Austin Hope Cabernet.
