A winning husband-wife team CANDICE VETTER candice.vetter@eap.on.ca

For many couples spending so much time together with careers so similar would be a problem, but Nick and Penelope Longval thrive on their lifestyle. Penny is from Hawkesbury and Nick from Fort Erie, and they first met in Folk Dance class. Says Penny, “He was a good polka partner.” Soon they were working together at school. After graduating from McGill’s concurrent education program they each taught at different private schools in Mon- treal. Although they both loved their work and the schools they were part of, they wanted to move back to Ontario and to a more rural setting, so they bought a house in Embrun, then looked for jobs. The day they moved Penny was hired by Mother Teresa Catholic School and Nick got a contract with St. Thomas Aquinas Catho- lic High School shortly afterwards. In time Penny was able to move to STA as well. She says she liked elementary school teach- ing, but with a very young family she felt she needed to work in a high school so she “wouldn’t go nuts.” The Longvals have four children—an older child followed by triplets. The triplets were born about the same time Nick started a new football program at STA, which was hard to manage, but as Penny says, “We get it,” referring to understanding the impor- tance of each other’s work. In fact she started a new rugby program at the school the next year. Between the two of them they have coached major sports and have started a high school foot- ball program, a high school rugby program, a community football league, which Nick is president of and coaches for, community fitness programs in the evening, several fitness programs for students, and many other activities. In addition they coach or manage for the Russell Soccer Club and the Russell Minor Hockey Association. They also compete in Spartan races and Penny runs half-marathon and 10-km runs. This year she became the school’s athletic director. How do they manage all this with four young kids? “We do these things as a fam- ily,” says Penny. “The kids don’t complain be- cause they see what we do is for them too.” The Longvals are very concerned about the need for children and youth to get lots of physical activity, not only for healthy bodies, but also to build character, to pro- vide learning experiences outside the class- room, and to form relationships. One of the newest programs is Penny’s morning workout just for STA girls. She also runs a yoga program open to anyone after school on Thursdays, and the Longvals run community workout classes for adults on Monday and Wednesday nights at 7:15— 8:15 p.m. and 8:15—9:15 p.m. Their work has not gone unnoticed. Nick recently won $2000 for the football pro- gram when named Runner-Up as Canadian Youth Coach of the Year by the NFL. He agrees that working with his spouse all the time is a good arrangement. What is the downside? Says Penny, “We haven’t found any. We cover each other and someone’s al- ways got your back. And we have fun. I can’t imagine living any other way.”
