Junior Warriors headed to the playoffs

February 10 marked the last basketball game of the season for the Vankleek Hill Collegiate (VCI)Warriors. Both junior and senior teams wrapped up the season Wednesday with the juniors heading off to the playoffs. “This year has seen well-spirited games,” said seniors’ coach, Ken MacLeod. “It has been great to coach these kids this year.” Although the Warriors’ senior boys’ teamhas not had a great year in basketball, MacLeod said the kids have played with a lot of heart and have been great sports

Brenden Rowe scored at 4:58 with assists from Tyler Dopelhamer and Max Edmond. At 1:09 Riley Sauvé scored assisted by GraemeMurray and at 1:01 the final goal was scored by Sam McGillis with an assist from Riley Sauvé. Game one of the playoffs will be in St. Isidore on Tuesday, February 16, at 8 p.m., followed by the second game on February 17, in Vankleek Hill, at 8 p.m.

The Vankleek Hill Cougars played well this weekend, winning 6-3 over the North Dundas Rockets on Saturday, and another 6-2 win over theMorrisburg Lions Sunday. “I thought we played a good game although we did have a little lapse in the second period, but I thought we controlled the play prettymuch all through the game,” said head coachMarc Berniqué, of Saturday’s game against the Rockets. “We were up three to one after the first, 4-3 after the second and the final 6-3.” Saturday’s first period against the Rockets saw Tyler Druce score with assists from Zackary Bougie and Nkolas Ayotte at 12:32. At 10:38 Brenden Rowe scored unassisted, and at 7:28 Brenden Rowe did it again with assists from Tyler Dopelhamer and Sam McGillis. In the second period, Tyler Dopelhamer scored at 9:37 with assists fromMax Edmond and Brenden Rowe. Third period saw Tyler Druce scoring again with an assist from CharlieMcKeown at 9:55, and the final goal at 2:55 from Graeme Murray with assists from Lee Seguin. Sunday’s game brought another victory for the Cougars. “This was our last game of the season,” said Berniqué. “Again, I thought we controlled the play and played well.” The first period saw Max Edmond at 7:41 with assists from Graeme Murray and Brenden Rowe.
