RECONNECTING COMMUNITIES

DONATIONS In 2021, only 18% of tax filers claimed donations on their income tax returns. This is the lowest percentage ever recorded. Canadians can claim their charitable contributions on their tax returns and receive a tax credit from the government. Data from these tax files show that the donation rate has fallen almost yearly between 2013 and 2022. The decline in donation rates on tax returns accelerated from 2020 to 2021. Self-reported donations are significantly higher than what is recorded in tax filings. In 2022, 56% of people said they donated in the past 12 months. This is still a 19 percentage point decline since 2013. This drop in charitable donors stands as a warning signal for the charitable sector.
