Hermosa Project by South 32 is a major new mine near Kino Springs, Arizona (near Nogales). This large-scale zinc, manganese, and silver mine in the Patagonia Mountains will produce minerals critical for the US energy supply. It projects over 800 direct long-term jobs and with an estimated $2 billion investment. Hermosa has the potential to be a globally significant producer of metals critical to a low-carbon future. They are now developing the Taylor zinc-lead-silver deposit, while continuing to progress studies of the Clark manganese-zinc-silver oxide deposit and exploring other prospects at the site. The mining plan for Hermosa’s principal deposits of zinc-lead-silver and manganese- zinc-silver deposit calls for underground mining methods. The design includes dual shafts and underground long-hole technology. Federal permitting documents describe the project as a small-footprint underground mining operation that will minimize surface disturbance and use modern, low-carbon design and engineering principles.

Johnson Camp Mine , located near Dragoon and owned by Gunnison Copper utilizes innovative Nuton technology for extracting copper from existing ore piles from their historic mine started in the 1881. They will deliver American-made copper cathodes. The project has been awarded $13.9 million in federal 48C tax credits for clean energy manufacturing and is expected to create hundreds of local jobs as it expands toward the end of the decade. A copper cathode is a refined form of copper used in various applications. It is produced through the electrolysis of copper ore or scrap metal. The cathode serves as the negative electrode in the electrolysis process. It typically has a purity of 99.99%, making it suitable for electrical applications. And copper cathodes are essential in the production of electrical wiring and electronics and are often sold in large sheets or plates for industrial use.

Hudbay Minerals has secured the necessary private land and permits for Phase I of its Copper World project located in the Santa Rita mountain, south of Tucson, allowing them to proceed with mining operations entirely on their own property. It projects a $1.7B investment with over 3000 jobs. Copper is everywhere in our modern lives. Caterpillar Tucson is a key technology hub for heavy-equipment giant Caterpillar Inc., which develops new systems and products at its mining-tech center downtown Tucson and tests them at its Tucson Proving Ground near Green Valley. The nearby Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center hosts an average 6,000 people annually for demonstrations and training, with a state-of-the-art education and conference complex and thousands of acres of desert for instruction and testing. A staff of about 30 manage the center, including demonstrator instructors who must have at least 10 years’ experience in heavy-equipment operations and are versed in a range of Caterpillar mining and construction equipment. Caterpillar does a lot of training to assist the mines that use Cat products to get the most from their investment. Cat instructors teach them how to be safe and efficient. Before the expansion, Caterpillar’s existing operations in the Tucson area (such as the Tucson Proving Ground and Tinaja Hills Demonstration Center) employed about 300 people . With the development of the new Tucson facilities and relocation of the Surface Mining and Technology division, Caterpillar plans will create more than 600 new jobs, bringing total company employment in Southern Arizona close to ~ 1,000 people once fully staffed.
