The STM Winter Athletic Media Guide features the Fall Sports and Athletes of St. Michael Catholic High School for the Winter Season 2021. We Thank all the STM Sponsors who are featured in the Athletic guide.
Dear Families and Guests,
We begin our sixth year as a school this year, and our fourth year as a varsity athletic program. Thank you for coming out to the ball game! We continue to be excited about our growth. We began in 2016 with 99 students and have added every year since, maxing out this fall with nearly 350 students. We offer students eight classes each year at both the Honors/A.P. or Collegiate Studies levels, with a four year requirement in English, Math, Science, History and Theology and a two year requirement in Languages and the Fine Arts, with the opportunity to take seven electives over the course of four years. In athletics, we now sponsor 20 varsity sports. We’re in the middle of a four-phased capital plan, having purchased 40 acres of adjacent property in 2019 and having just completed a field house with lockers and weight room in the spring of 2021. Phase III will be the site development for an athletic complex, and Phase IV will be the completion of the complex, with bleachers, fences, dugouts, bathrooms, lights, etc. We are grateful for everyone’s generosity to help us get to this point. And yes, we’re thrilled by the addition of our new football coach, Philip Rivers, who began with us in March after completing a sterling 17-year career as Q.B. in the N.F.L. Not only does he bring a depth of knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to our program, we believe he will also greatly advance the mission of St. Michael, to help our students become “scholars, leaders and disciples of Jesus Christ.” I hope you enjoy your time with us. Please remember to cheer for our teams in a manner befitting our mission, and at the end of the contest, let us go home as friends and neighbors, blessed to cheer for our school and our student-athletes.
Faustin Weber, Principal
GO CARDINALS!
Faustin Weber Principal
Hello Cardinal fans, Welcome to St. Michael Catholic High School. It is hard to believe we are starting our sixth year of athletic competition. As you know, the world is still a little different today than it was in previous years. But, like Mr. Weber has said, “We have done this once, we can do it again!” Athletics are meant to be joyous. As we all deal with our new normal again this year, I ask you to please remember we are here to watch our children enjoy themselves on the field. Please support them in a positive manner. I also thank you in advance for your cooperation by following the guidelines we have laid out for attending athletic competitions. Our campus is alive with activity. All of our teams have been working since June to prepare for this season. I would like to thank all of our coaches for the work they have done to get their squads ready for this season. We are already reaping the benefits of our new field house. The weight room has been a welcomed addition to help prepare our athletes for competition. We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to the capital campaign. We start this school year with 21 varsity teams, 15 junior varsity teams, 1 freshman team, and 6 middle school teams who will all compete for St. Michael. We have come a long way from our first season in 2016 when we only had 9 junior varsity teams. This season we have added more middle school teams to our athletic department. Students from Christ the King, St. Benedict, and St. Patrick will play together on our Cardinal teams in volleyball, basketball, and baseball. We also have several new faces on our coaching staff. We would like to welcome Coach Rivers (football), Coach Gellington (cheer), and Coach Bailey (middle school volleyball) to our community. Thank you for your support of Cardinal Athletics. Our athletic programs would not be possible without the support of our boosters (the Cardinal Club), corporate sponsors, and the families in our community. All of the sponsors represented in this media guide have committed to furthering Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Mobile and specifically here in Baldwin County. Please support their businesses whenever possible. Their contributions have helped our teams in many ways. Please enjoy the game. Again, these are exciting times at St. Michael Catholic High School. On behalf of our administration, teachers, coaches, and student athletes I would like to thank you again for your support of the St. Michael athletic programs. We will always strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom. We look to build on the great foundation that was laid in our first five years.

We want our students to “go for it,” to extend themselves beyond their comfort zones, to delve deeper into their studies, to try out for teams (even if not selected), to join new clubs, to serve others in new ways, and to strive for excellence. In so doing, we believe students will grow into young men and women who are good, happy, confident in their futures, and ready to lead others to what is holy and true. Infused with optimism, immersed in a culture of excellence, blessed by teachers who care about students and lift them up when they stumble, and elevated by a dynamic Catholic faith, may St. Michael help form great hearts and minds to do great things! BOYS BOWLING
BOWLING COACH
Rita Treutal • Head Coach Rita Treutel is entering her second season with the athletic department at St. Michael. She has been teaching English at St. Michael for the past four years. Hoping to draw on the experience gained from that one bowling class she took while at Auburn University, she stepped in last year to work with the boys’ and girls’ bowling teams despite having little background in athletics. She muddled her way through the season, coaching the team to few wins but to much greater acceptance of their teammates and themselves, as athletes and human beings.
Treutel committed herself to creating an energetic, non-judgmental, and caring environment in which players could explore their bowling acumen and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with team play. Team members impressed Treutel with their work ethic, dedication to the game, consistently improving scores, ranch fry eating skills, and enthusiastic support of one another. Treutel, a Fairhope native, joined the faculty of St. Michael after having spent nearly two decades teaching at the university level. Between leaving UAB and arriving at St. Michael, she taught
English and coached at Locust Fork High School where she led the boys’ varsity baseball team to a Blount County Championship. Treutel lives in Spanish Fort with her husband, Bill. They have three children, Philip, Andrew, and Sarah Beth, a 2020 St. Michael graduate. She looks forward to working with St. Michael bowlers in the future.

Marisa Lund • Athletic Trainer
Mimi Smith serves as an assistant to the Athletic Trainer in St. Michael’s first official Student Assistant Athletic Trainer program. This is her first year to assist the Cardinal football team. “My favorite part about being a student athletic trainer is the energy that you get from watching and hearing the team get hyped and how they encourage each other. Ms. Marisa (Lund) also gives each of us a lot of training and support, and this position has made me look at broadening my career choices for the future.” In addition to assisting the football program, Mimi is a member of the Class of 2023 and is the goalkeeper for the Varsity soccer team. Mimi is the daughter of Amy and Jason Smith and they currently enjoy living in Silverhill, AL. Proud sister and fellow soccer teammate Devon is a student at Christ the King. Mimi Smith • Student Assistant Athletic Trainer
Marisa Lund is serving her fourth year as Athletic Trainer for St. Michael Catholic High School. She is also currently employed at Encore Rehabilitation.
