HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE
KEY SCHOOL DATES
A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER Last weekend our A level French students enjoyed a wonderful trip to Paris. It was an action packed weekend which included visits to the recently reopened Notre-Dame Cathedral, Sacre Coeur and the Dior Museum as well as lunch in a traditional creperie and a boat trip along the Seine. This was both a fabulous cultural experience as well as an opportunity to practise their language skills. On Monday Mrs Williams and Mrs Moses accompanied a group of Year 9 students as they attended training with the NHS Schools Health Team to become Mental Health Ambassadors. The students will be working next term to develop strategies to support student resilience and wellbeing. On Wednesday we welcomed guests to our Design Technology Exhibition to showcase the amazing products our GCSE students created. The themes this year were Participating in Sport, Eating away from home and Educational Toys. It was wonderful to see not only the students’ technical skills but also their individual interpretations of each theme. We were delighted to welcome A level musicians from across the region for a conference this afternoon. The session was delivered by Dr Christopher Tarrant from Newcastle University and explored the War of the Romantics and musical meaning in the nineteenth-century symphony. We would like to wish all our students and families celebrating Eid ul Fitr in the coming days Eid Mubarak.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
info@waldegravesch.org STAY CONNECTED WITH US:
The hot topic for young people’s wellbeing at the moment is the impact of the Netflix drama Adolescence, which highlights the effects of toxic masculinity, online radicalisation and the role young people play in shaping each other’s beliefs. Former England football manager Sir Gareth Southgate, spoke out last week about the need for better male role models and the danger of “callous, manipulative and toxic influencers”. The good news is that most people do not subscribe to harmful ideologies and attitudes. Harmful behaviours often thrive not because most people support them - but because people think their peers do. To counteract the narrative that our children may be encountering on social media, it’s crucial that parents and carers are well-informed and able to discuss the content and interactions that their children are exposed to online. Kooth have produced a really helpful online safety guide, which includes links to videos, podcast episodes and articles to help parents and carers to navigate this challenge.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9
It was great to see so many students dressing up in red last Friday in support of Red Nose Day. Tutor groups came up with ‘cheesy jokes’ where the best ones were selected to be read out by members of staff in school. The video (which you can also see on our instagram) was then played in PM registration for an hilarious end to the day. Congratulations to 9SAN for winning the best joke competition. Well done! Today we have celebrated the achievements of those students who have demonstrated the Waldegrave values of ‘Achieve, Enjoy and Empower’ in our termly celebration assembly. It was a real pleasure to see so many stu- dents being recognised for their contribution to the school. Well done! The e-praise points have been counted and the form group winners were 9EMU. Our individual leader was Mia C in 9EMU. Congratulations! Additional congratulations to Lily F and Keira E, 9EFR and Fleur B, 9EMU for achieving a distinction in their recent Grade 2 and 3 guitar exams. While Annabel L 9EFR achieved an exceptional 92/100 for her Trinity Grade 2 digital singing exam. These are fantastic results, well done all! As we move into the last week of term, we encourage our students to maintain their high standards right until the last minute of the last day. Please can I ask parents and carers to ensure that students resist the temptation to go for nails, hair colours or piercings that will bring students out of line with our uniform policy.
Many thanks for your support and have a good weekend!
MRS MORTIMER, HEAD OF YEAR 9
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘One of Us is Lying’ by Karen M. McManus The book is set in a high school, where five teenagers Addy, Cooper, Nate, Bronwyn and Simon all end up in detention together. A few minutes into the detention a car accident happens right outside, while their teacher hurries out to check what has happened, one of the students, Simon, falls dead. The remaining four students are the main suspects because they were present during his death BUT…. who did it? I really loved reading this book, after the first chapter I was hooked and couldn’t seem to put it down. There are cliffhangers everywhere. New evidence keeps popping up and every time I thought I knew who had killed Simon, more clues came out suggesting another person. Every character has a secret to hide, and an interesting backstory. At the end there was such a plot twist that I was left with my jaw hanging open, I could never have guessed how the murder case unravels. I recommend this to people who love murder mystery!! - Camille P, 8PUN

FRIDAY MATHS PUZZLE
Our learning focus for tutor time on Fridays this term is mathematics, with the maths department setting some thought provoking brain teasers each week for pupils to grapple with. This week’s puzzle is interactive - click on the image to open the website and give it a try! Please have a go at this week’s problem, talk to your child about how they approached it and what the solutions were. We hope you enjoy these at home as much as the students have enjoyed them with their form!

Year 7 Netball - RSSP Tournament
Last Thursday our Year 7 Basketball Team were named Borough Champions after winning their final match of the Richmond Schools Sports Partnership League. The team were ecstatic as you can see in their photos. They have played some fantastic basketball over the term and grown as a team - well done to them all! This week our Year 7 Netball teams took part in the Year 7 Richmond Schools Sports Partnership Netball tournament. They all had a great time playing in the sunshine! The A team (pictured in beige) got through to the semi finals but lost to Lady Eleanor Holles School, caming 4th overall in the cup competition. The B team won their play off match against Richmond Upon Thames School to finish 5th in the plate competition. Great efforts this week from all our players - keep up the hard work!
