Connections & Communication 2024 Highlights

It is incredible to think that we are celebrating 9 years of the Junior School Symposium! Since its inception in 2016, the Junior School Symposium has become a much looked forward to event in our academic calendar each year. The Symposium is a fantastic way to go beyond the curriculum by exploring, discussing, debating and doing. This year’s theme of Tradition and Innovation is one that our pupils will continue to think about as they move through their school careers. In a world that is rapidly changing, there are opportunities to learn lessons from the past whilst creating new ideas for the future. We will once again be co-hosting the day with JAGS Junior School and welcoming boys and girls from Dulwich Wood Primary School. Our international schools will also be hosting their own events and diving into this theme, ensuring exploration with both local and international elements. ‘Free Learning’ is a key tenet of a Dulwich education and we are so proud of the opportunities to challenge and stretch our learners. We hope that all of the children have a wonderful time experiencing new opportunities and come away from the event more curious than ever, to keep learning about their passions. The Philosophy of Tradition and Innovation In this session, we will explore the idea of tradition, the things we do because they’ve been passed down through time and innovation, and the new ideas that can change how we live. Through stories, games, and discussion, we’ll think about why people follow traditions and when it might be right to do something different. Together, we’ll reflect on how old and new ideas can work together to shape the future.

DNA - Past, Present and Future Explore the history of DNA, a dive into the secret code that is inside every living thing. Through hands-on activities and discussions you will imagine the amazing possibilities and big questions that come with unlocking the code of life and what the study of DNA might mean for our future.

Light Through Time: From Candles to Lasers How our understanding and use of light has evolved- from early fire-based sources to modern fibre-optic communication.

Ancient innovation - cuneiform writing We will look at the development of cuneiform writing, and read some texts from thousands of years ago that were written in that form. We may even get to write in cuneiform ourselves! Painting: shaking it up! Painting is an age old tradition, but paint brushes haven’t always been the same! In this session we look at how brush technology has changed over time and make our own brushes to use in creative and unpredictable ways.

Garden Croquet Following a discussion about the the origins and history of this traditional sport, pupils will play a game of Garden Croquet on one of our beautiful pieces of lawn. This will be an opportunity for interaction and re-enactment of one of the continent’s oldest and most traditional sports.

Guillaume Apollinaire: The Great Innovator of French Poetry Guillaume Apollinaire was a true pioneer of French poetry, breaking away from traditional forms to create new, exciting ways to express emotion and ideas. He invented the concept of calligrammes (shape poems), where poems took visual shapes that reflected their meaning. Come along to this workshop to explore how Apollinaire’s bold ideas changed the world of poetry and have a go at creating your own calligramme.

Foley Sound Art Can you recreate the sound of a flock of birds using only rubber gloves? Or walking through snow using corn flour? Dive into the world of post-production movie-making with Foley. Foley is the reproduction of sounds which are recorded in sync with what is happening on a screen. In this session, we will have the opportunity to test various items and materials to find what sounds work best in time to a film sequence, adding our own sound effects to a short movie clip.

Traditional craft -. Learn the art of paper quilling Using simple quilling techniques we will create a 3D picture using coloured paper, capturing a modern take on a traditional method.

“Earthquake-proof” buildings - traditional vs. modern innovation This session will look at countries that over time have experienced many earthquakes. Whilst looking at traditional building designs, we will also look at how modern innovation has supported the difficult task of “earthquake-proofing” buildings. The session will culminate in a group task of trying to develop an “earthquake-proof” structure.

Tradition vs. Innovation: Play, Debate, and Decide! Tradition vs. Innovation Bingo, where we will race to match traditional and modern inventions, sparking discussions on how innovations have transformed everyday life. Then, we’ll dive into the “Keep It or Change It?” Debate Battle, where teams defend or challenge traditions, developing persuasive arguments on whether they should stay the same or evolve for the future.

From Chalkboards to AI learning How far has education come? Until relatively recently, schools have looked very similar to those of Victorian times, but technology has developed so much recently with the evolution of AI. We need to make sure we are taking advantage of the tools at our disposal to provide the classroom of the future. Are you up to the challenge? Music Through Time What do the Beatles and Beethoven have in common? Is traditional music outdated and boring? Has music changed over time? We will explore and compare traditional sounds with modern beats and then create our own original mix.

Classrooms of the Future Join us for an exciting hands-on session where we will explore both old and modern classrooms, comparing the changes in design, technology, and learning spaces. Then, using our creativity, we’ll get the chance to design our own futuristic classroom! What will our dream space look like? High-tech gadgets, flexible seating or interactive walls? It’s up to us to imagine the classroom of tomorrow!

Tiles Through Time: Blending Tradition and Innovation Today, we’ll explore how old and new ideas can work together in art! We’ll look at beautiful traditional tiles from around the world and discover their patterns and styles Then, we’ll get creative by designing our own tiles - starting with a classic pattern but adding a fun, modern twist! Will you use bold new colours, mix patterns, or create a hidden surprise? After making our tiles, we’ll share our designs and see how tradition and innovation can come together in ama z ing ways!

Tradition and Innovation in German and Italian Culture During this session, you will compare traditions such as pi zz a-making with modern innovations in engineering and fashion. Through discussions, games, and creative activities, students will learn about cultural differences and create their own blend of tradition and innovation. It will be interactive and lots of fun!

The Evolution of Education Ever wondered how children learned in ancient times? Or how schools went from being for just the rich to being for everyone? Join us for a fun, interactive session where we’ll travel through history to discover how education has changed from the earliest human cultures to the modern-day classroom! From cave paintings to computers, you’ll explore how learning has evolved - and even get to imagine what schools might look like 100 years from now! Don’t miss out on this exciting journey through time!

Tech-Tee Creation: Design Your Smart TShirt! Smart fabrics represent a fusion of fashion and technology. Design a futuristic T-Shirt that not only looks good but has enhanced functionality beyond traditional textiles.

Remixing the Masters: A modern Art Challenge Get ready to put a cool twist on classic art! In this session, you’ll take inspiration from famous artists like Van Gogh and Monet - but with a modern makeover! Use colours and patterns to remix a masterpiece and make it your own. Let’s mix old and new to create something ama z ing!

Sporting Apparel: Shaping the Future of Sport We will explore how sports clothing has developed and advanced over time. We will begin by going back in time and looking at traditional sports clothing and considering the limitations. We will explore how through technology and design developments, sports apparel has improved. You will be tasked with designing a new piece of sports clothing or footwear that puts innovation first.Perhaps you will choose to design the latest, speediest trainers? Or perhaps your favourite football team’s new kit? Or maybe you will create a new piece of clothing to help you perform best during your sporting activities?

The Future of Children’s Toys In this session we will look at the history of toys across the ages and discuss how Artificial Intelligence is revolutionising the toy market. We will consider this trajectory and examine its advantages and disadvantages, before designing our own futuristic toys that are enhanced using AI.
